Re: From 47 Degrees to 160 in One Hour on Solar

If you were using the engine cooling system to heat the water, is that controlled by a thermostat?

On our old boat coolant heated water used to come out the taps close to boiling.

Water must be stored at a high temperature (no lower than 50 °C -122 °F) as a precaution against bacteria. It can be delivered from the tap at a lower temperature (48 to 50 °C -118 to 122 °F) to prevent scalds.

The engine heats it to 180 f.
I'd need to install new temp regulating faucets, so if we motor somewhere, I just approach the faucets with care !

The hot water tank can be kept as hot as normal engine temp if you put one of these on the outlet of the hot water tank. Thermostatic Mixing Valves - The Dangers of Hot Water and Scalding - Learn About - Watts

In my opinion it should be on all heaters that get heated by an engine loop. It also makes the hot water last better.

And yes, I will turn the thermostat down a bit.

You have to heat the water above the risk for legionaries disease, which is over 140 F.

Install a mixing value on the output to get the temp down to 120.
