Fuse between solar controller and battery - ANL?

I need to install a 75 Amp fuse near my positive battery terminal (actually the shunt) and my solar controller. I'm using 6 AWG cable.

I'm looking at different fuse types, holders etc.

Would an ANL type fuse be appropriate here?

Sure. An ANL is simple and does the job. But for not a whole bunch more, you could use one of these circuit breakers and not have to worry about fuses.

I agree with the breaker suggestion. I went that way for my solar controllers. Personally, I only use fuses when I can't use a breaker (usually for something like a battery bank main fuse). Breakers provide the option of a maintenance shutoff without having to shut down all power, which can come in handy.

The ANL located near the battery is basically protecting the connecting wire from a high current backfeed of something failing in the controller(s)/ wiring. Proper size ANL should be fine. A circuit breaker/ switch on the controller(s) output end of things is also a handy addition.

Re: Fuse between solar controller and battery - ANL?

I installed two breakers for my solar panels. One is between the panels and their input to the solar controller. The other is between the solar controller and the batteries. This allows me to turn off the panels but leave the controller energized or turn everything off. The breakers also protect the wiring between the panels and the controller and between the controller and the battery bank.

Most solar controllers get their power from the batteries so that should be the first breaker you turn on and the last one you turn off. Turning the batteries on before turning on the feed from the panels allows the controller to power up and run through it's diagnostics before accepting higher voltage from the panels. When disabling the system, turn the panels off first then power down the controller by turning off the battery breaker.

Keep in mind these particular thermal circuit breakers have a low interrupt rating. For most yacht battery banks this interrupt rating is little low unless there is a further fuse or suitable circuit breaker before the battery.
