High Amp Alternator Wire Gauge

Dear brains trust

I just Replaced my regular amp with a high amp one (95amp).

The old wire to the battery is 8wg. Do I need to replace it with a higher gauge?

Apologies if this is a basic question

I would replace with a fresh larger gauge wire, that way its one less item to worry about.

Re: High Amp Alternator Wire Gauge

Minimum is #6 to protect the wire and should also be ok for voltage drop (<3%) for 2M. To get the same 3% drop you'll need to go with #1 for 9M at max amperage. If the banks are being charged at the same time then I would go with the bigger wire to keep the charging voltage at each bank close.

Sorry, I should have said #0 for the 9M run. Here's a table to help:

Re: High Amp Alternator Wire Gauge

You need to upgrade the wire in any case, but how much is a function of several things.

Are the cables in a conduit or in free air?

Are your alternators externally or internally regulated?

What is the 9m run used for--to regularly charge depleted house banks or only occasionally?
