How Many KW's are you Using?

I just got my first electrical bill from the Marina for a slip that I've been in for 20 days. They say I used 1200KW's in that 20 days. How is that possible?

My house only used 1135KWH in 61 days.

How much are you guys out there using?

In the house..?

Bout 900 kwh per month I guess, to include AC and everything of course.

The boat only draws AC power for a table fan but 24/7, perhaps 25 kwh per month..?

Not much, but just bought an electric car, things could change...

Re: How Many KW's R U Using?

if you're not living aboard i would just unplug from the marina. even when i'm at a marina i live on my own 12 volt system. also might avoid some electrolysis problems...

Something's not right there.

I use 2000kWh a year, and I will now generate about 2000kWh a year with my solar panels on my house.

But, I also kind of live as if I am on a boat when it comes to not having much requiring electricity.

I havent spent all that much time in Marinas, but down here in the high heat time of the year, with 3000 + square feet to cool we use way less then half that amount of KWs a month! There has to be a problem somewhere with the meter or theres a big electrical leak someplace !! I would ask how my useage compairs to other bills in the Marina ! Just my 2 cents

I always write down the meter reading myself when I check into a marina--I and others have been burned before.

I do keep an oil heater running for the cold months but it can't be that high or it would pop the 15A breaker.

Tomorrow I'll be checking the meter while I'm there to see how much useage in 1 hour. I'd like to put a meter between the shore and boat to see if there's a difference.

If I calculate the 1200 KW in 20 days correctly, that would be (10) 250Watt light bulbs burning constantly. Hell, that would burn down the boat.

Re: How Many KW's R U Using?

Delmarrey,

2,5 kW average is not really all that much, depending on what you run. A typical small air heater runs arouns 1 to 1,5 kW, my water heater runs 800 W when recharging, the battery charger uses quite a bit, my air dryer draws 800 W - so my first attempt would be: Verify what you have on the boat and what is actually switched on, and then complain, if still necessary.

I know I draw probably more when I'm on the boat, less if I'm away...

Re: How Many KW's R U Using?

Whether or not this is reasonable depends entirely on what you are running. Without some information about that, any comments that you get are essentially meaningless.

Re: How Many KW's R U Using?

The typical electric heater, well OK pretty much all 115V electric heaters will use about 1116 KW a month if they run 24/7. Which I'm betting they do up in the PNW.

At the dock in summer I would use maybe 25kw a month or less then $3 a month Most of that the fridge. Winter time would jump to $30 ish a month due to electric heat.

Re: How Many KW's R U Using?

In my slip in Rockport, Texas the most I ever used was 550 KW. That was running 2 electric heaters thermostatically controlled at night. Summer about 50-60. Thats full time liveaboard.
