I am overcharging?

How do you know if the charger is overcharging my batteries? I have 4 6v trojan for a total of 840 amph. When i leave the boat i allways leave the charger on, but when i am back the next week there is a smell of like acid in the air. The batteries are not boiling.

Re: I am overcharging?

Look to see what the amperage is when it drops to float.
However as has been said, what are your absorption and float voltages?

Re: I am overcharging?

Let's start over.

If your batteries are the venerable T105's and you have a 12 volt system then they are in a series/parallel configuration. Each battery is 220 Ahr give or take @ 6V. Two in series yields a nominal 12V battery with 220Ahr. Take two sets and put them in series and you have 440 Ahr, give or take, at 12V.

Now that is out of the way, questions #2 and #3 need answers before anybody can provide reasonable help.

That's assuming that it is a smart charger, so the first question is "what charger?"

Re: I am overcharging?

If your water is not dropping any overcharging is not significant.

Correction in my Post #4
Quote:

Should read: Take two sets and put them in parallel and you have 440 Ahr, give or take at 12V.
Excuse: Hadn't had my first beer after a hot day on a boat...dehydrated!
