Installing the DC/DC Converter 24 step down to 12:12

When I was about to install the DC/DC Converter I made sure all switches were OFF at chart table.

I then went about installing the DC/DC converter by attaching the 24V input positive and negative cables from their respective bus bars. I then attached the positive output cable to the 12V positive bus bar - no problems. BUT when I attached the negative output cable I got a small spark which concerned me.

Am I correct in concluding that there:
  • Must be a short in the wiring somewhere
  • A component (light/fans/pumps etc) which is switched on that somehow I have overlooked.
Your advice would be appreciated

Suppressing sparks when attaching buck converter to battery

i have bought a cheap DC/DC converter (24v to 19v, 15A, link). When i attach a 24v battery pack to the converter input i get sparks. Is there any way to suppress these sparks when i attach the converter?
Edit: I want to power a Intel NUC mini computer with the converter. My idea was to use a relay to turn the dcdc output on and off. Wouldn't the sparks damage the relay contacts or weld them ?dc-dc-converter

Sparks are caused by high inrush current, probably to load the input caps of your DCDC. They are not harmful per se, but of course depending on the operating environment they can pose a threat. Can you share the part number of your DCDC, and the load conditions you will be using it for? Also, understanding why you need to suppress them is key. (Vladimir Cavero Dec 2016)

the battery is the load drawing power. you should have connected the output first. when you connected the input first you made the disconnected output wires go live..

I can see the logic in what you say.

But I followed the manufacturers directions (about two lines) and it is working fine.

Thanks.
