Yes I called Balmar and MaineSail to confirm it is #3, I believe they have updated their manual recently

Data Point: the SG200 does have a 'Carbon Foam' battery type listed as an option for battery configuration.

Since it is propietory, its the only way to describe it.
It's not magic, if you really want to know the principle of the SG it's found in the inventor's master's thesis

I am sure. I just don't know how to explain it in 2 sentences to someone who comes on the boat and asks what that is! I just want to ensure it works and is accurate, which it seems to be!

Well don't go to too much trouble then, but would be nice to have as a reference.

I can't find Gibby's off hand but while looking through my hard drive I did come across this thesis. I'm sure it'll pop up when I'm not actively looking.

Ah yes, good old "electrochemical impedance spectroscopy", rings a loud bell that. 8-)

Anyone have access to a PDF of:

S. Piller, M. Perrin, A. Jossen, "Methods for state-of-charge determination and their applications", Journal of Power Sources, Vol. 96, Issue: 1, June 1, 2001. pp. 113-120

Re: Interesting behavior - Firefly batteries, Balmar Smartgauge, small solar panel

The Balmar term for that side* of the SG200's operation is

"active impedance compensation"

*as opposed to the coulomb counting totalizing
