Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor

I bought a FTZ non crimping and worked so well that I bought a second one.

I now leave the original on the boat in BIG Ziploc with desiccant. The second one is at home for automotive stuff.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor

I went the cheap route very successfully. I did a total rewiring of my Bene 523 charging and power systems (many hundreds of feet of wires, including 200 of 4/0, 150 of 1/0 and countless others ... including some massive 377 kcmil to handle a 600 amp load). Did several hundred crimps (all Ancor crimps and wire). Used two Amazon crimpers - one smaller ($40) and one larger (easily does 4/0 and had no problem with my 377, at $45).

Smaller: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00...op_mb_pd_title

Larger: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01...op_mb_pd_title

You might get away with just the larger one, but the smaller one is so easy to use (but is limited to 2/0 max)

I also got clear heat shrink and a label maker and put labels on every wire and placed clear shrink over them to keep in place, and used appropriate colored self-adhesive (heat glue) shrink over all ends - all from eBay.

Worked great - never felt like I had a bad crimp or was frustrated with the tools.

For what it’s worth, I got this massive wire cutter also for $45 and it slices thru 4/0 with ease (and had no problems with my 377 kcmil):

Good luck!

Any marine store in Canada - probably all actually, can buy from either Western Marine or their other division Transat. If your local marine store doesn't have the lugs get them to order them.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor

KL Jack Co. in Maine stocks the FTZ. I know they ship to Canada and price is lowest I've seen.
