For me I'll stick to known good standards as much as possible.

UL ratings are completely different according to the use case. If I can figure out how to comply with ABYC, and only use UL1426 wiring on boats, then I do not need to investigate how components used in other contexts compare.
I asked. Luckily you know all the answers and alerted me to any Consequences.

Battery cables definitely come in red, not just black.
On the other hand, Type3 Machine Cable, which is extremely similar to battery cable, normally tinned and with what look like the same number and types of strands, I've only seen in black. And since one very large surplus bargain roll did the job...Red tape on the positive cables, yes.

I suspect it probably is not rated for the same oil resistance and temperature rating, but it wasn't being run in hot oily places.

I guess you cant have everything- high quality and highly regulated standards compliant equipment at a bargain basement price eh.

Safety, AYBC, UL compliance etc doesnt come for free.

How does that expression about beggars cant be choosers go?

No I just meant among other makers just as good, as listed above, not talking about compromising on quality.

Ancor having more brand recognition is usually overpriced, within that category.

But yes if a customer really wants yellow, nice to know we now have more choices.

Well Im sure all those wanting to be follow AYBC recomendations will be looking for Yellow for all their DC Neg wires.

But as you say each boat owner is free to do as they wish and accept the consqueces. I thought this last bit was a touch 'dramatic'. But Im always up for a laugh.

You know of other more 'reasonablly' priced Yellow marine wire sources?

Not that I have shopped around yet but I am upto that point in my refit soon. Any links gratefully accepted.

Ah yes you are right, my bad, I do remember seeing you mentioning them. You post a lot and my memory is bad.
I had a look at bestboatwire.com. As you say they quote al the right alphabet stsndards. As you say definitely chesper. But although they list Yellow it doesnt look like they have it for all sizes. Ie I am after 2/0 and they dont seem to have it. Also it looks like there are less strands than the PKYS listed stuff so I guess thats some of the price difference. I suppose we get what we pay for eh.

Re: Mis-wired 12VDC jack (let the smoke out)

Does anyone know the parasitic draw of one of those whiz bang DC panels like I mentioned earlier with the LED's and digital volt meter? Thanks!

Feels like going in circles.

Red and black in big thick bank wiring would be pretty obvious, can't see anyone with a clue thinking that was AC

So so far you-
specified AYBC compliant, ie Yellow Neg etc,
I linked a suggestion,
You said it was too expensive,
I asked you for an Alternative,
You begrudgingly resupplied links,
I said this wasnt the same products I linked to,
You are now complaing we are going in circles.
Couldnt agree more.
I can see you have a SOH.

Depends on the panel, of course...

Our analog voltmeter takes a couple of mA, some digital meters could take 10 to 50 mA... but if they're on a switch, then they only draw when on. So parasitic draw = 0.

LED-lighted switches - the LEDs probably are 5 mA or less each when on.

USB adaptors - depending on type they could have an idling (no-load) current of ~10 mA. We put our USB jacks on the same breaker as cabin lighting, because that always gets turned off when we leave the boat. Yes, if we want USB charging during the day the lighting breaker goes on but all lights are switched off.

That was in the context of physical specs, safety etc when stating my preference to not mess around with other types.

And really just as a convenience, shorthand for "known good", not slavishly and not in every other context.

In fact I just quoted my statement again, that Yellow is not always required IMO.

But it's great that you found us a source, which I can use for when I (or an owner I'm helping) thinks that fat yellow is a good idea, for whatever reason.
