Need a new cranking battery

Hello:

I need a new cranking battery (12V). Prices range from $100 up to over $500. It is for a Westerbeke 63 HP diesel. Just curious if anyone has a recommendation?

Thanks...

Re: Need a new cranking battery

I’m in the process of rebuilding the electrical system on my E27. We’re doing lithium for the house battery and lead acid for the starter. Went to my local batter shop, and the cheapest option was to just go with a cheap group 24. With box, core charge, taxes and fees, I got out if there for $170. Much cheaper than the more compact/less power options. The battery will spend its entire life on a charger, and only be used to crank the engine.

Past threads have recommended the Duracell series as sold by Sam's Club.

Re: Need a new cranking battery

If it's for the B473 I'd go with a good marine battery.
I've had real good luck with Interstates deep cycle 27M-EFB for around $180. They lasted almost 7 years. I had 2 of them.
The trick is to NEVER let them get below 25%.

Re: Need a new cranking battery

Any FLA or AGM starting battery that is 600CCA or higher. Duralast, DieHard, NAPA Legend, Interstate are all fine. the first three are made in the same factory. You do not need marine or deep or dual cycle if you are using it solely as a starting battery. If you plan on deep cycling the battery then yes get a deep cycle or dual purpose battery. Caveat on the AGM is they like to be kept charged but do not need venting and self discharge is much lower than on a wet FLA.

If it’s just cranking, hard to beat EastPenn/Deka/Duracell/Napa Grp31 12v batteries. Their 1000CCA is used in lots of heavy equipment, sitting around, low maintenance but can be filled if u overcharge it. 65lbs, $175.

Re: Need a new cranking battery

You don't want a deep cycle battery if it is just for engine cranking. They don't like the high discharge rate that starters use. Regular car battery is designed for that use.

Duralast now for 7 yrs, no bad ones, all still robust.
At that time, $110, 1000 CCA. FLA Batteries
Keep charged, check fluid.
Distilled H2O, for top off.
No problems

Re: Need a new cranking battery

Almost any 'Starting' battery will suffice, since, for their '63B Four' Diesel, Westerbeke only recommends a starting battery rated 300 -to- 400 cold cranking amp (CCA) Cold Cranking Amps [@ 10V].

Re: Need a new cranking battery

If the house bank is reasonably sized you could start off if that.

Re: Need a new cranking battery

I like interstate. I have always used deep cycle, one lasted 11 years. They stay on the boat while it’s up for six months of winter.

Do NOT buy Walmart batteries.

Johnson controls make a little over 1/3 of all automotive batteries manufactured worldwide. Just picked up a 1000 CCA 90 AH H-8 from Walmart for $149.00 out the door (no sales tax here). The only difference between the following "partial" list of brands is the sticker.
Brand Manufacturer
ACDelco Johnson Controls
Advance Auto Johnson Controls
AutoCraft Johnson Controls
Autolite Exide
AutoZone Johnson Controls
Bosch Johnson Controls
Champion Johnson Controls
Costco Johnson Controls
Delco Johnson Controls
Delco-Remy Exide
DieHard Johnson Controls
Duralast Johnson Controls
Duralast Johnson Controls
Equalizer Johnson Controls
EverStart (Wal-Mart) Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on model
Firestone Johnson Controls
Interstate Johnson Controls
Marathon Exide
Motorcraft Johnson Controls
NAPA Exide
Optima Johnson Controls
Orbital Exide
Pep Boys Johnson Controls
Sears Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on model

Wal-Mart Exide or Johnson Controls, depending on the model.
