Need battery help

I have a 17 yr old Dehler 34 that came with Exide gel batteries. They are no longer holding a charge and in need of replacement. I’ve tried researching battery types but am confused now. Specifically can I replace these gels with AGMs? Or do I need to replace with gels? The charger is a master volt that has worked well so far but I am concerned if it would work on AGMs. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Need battery help

The AGM's will substitute fine for the Gels. Your battery charger may have a little switch for changing the charge profile from Gel to AGM, refer battery charger manual.

How long did the Gels last? Why do you want AGM?

Re: Need battery help

Gels lasted 16 years. Considering AGMs because they are more available, do well in cold (Michigan) for storage, and cost. Cost is not as big a deal. Haven’t had shore power this year (high water) so really haven’t had the batteries on the boat charger yet. Tried an automotive charger and they don’t hold charge.

Re: Need battery help

Do you have solar? AGMs require being fully charged regulasrly, and are much more $$ than wet cells, either 12 or 6V.
