Outboard Alternator

I have an 8hp Johnson sailmaster with an alternator. I have it hooked up to a single 12v battery. I've been told that it has an output of about 3 amp. I don't know if this is accurate. I have used this system for a few months now and haven't had any problems. Should I have an inline fuse between the ob and my battery? If so, I would guess on the positive line. What amp? Should I install an ammeter?
