It seems like on a boat it would be possible to use a gyro and a sort of gimbaled approach. Once set on its azimuth and tracking the gyro would compensate for rolling and pitching.

Just seems like a lower tech solution. The costs wouldn't be worth the effort I'd think, but it could be done. Like tracking a Direct TV Satellite from a plane, car or boat could be accomplished with stepper motors and a gps and some creative software algorithms.
