Paguro 4000 Timing Out

Hi all,

I have a Paguro 4000 (Farymann) generator. I was having it serviced by an engineer who stripped it, serviced it and put it back together. He now claims the timing is off and has run out of time to fix it.

I appreciate it is an old engine with old technology whos parts are now very limited.

In order to get this fixed though, should I ship it to a specialist (there's one in Athens) which would cost £££ or is the issue fixable by a reasonably competent engineer?

What do you think? Thanks.

How far was it stripped? What is the evidence that the timing is off? The timing on those is just simply shimming the fuel pump.

Re: Paguro 4000 Timing Out

The main shaft had seized previously and the generator was in poor condition. So it was stripped down, reconditioned, new seals etc. The engineer says that the "timing is off, it is too late in the cycle."

Ah really? So I take it any experienced mechanic could possibly resolve that?

The engineer says that he simply doesn't have time to fix it (he works on big superyachts so might also be a money thing).

If the timing is too late, removal of shim(s) is in order.

Any decent diesel mechanic should be able to address this. If there are no shims present more work may be involved.

Thanks SailMonkey. Makes sense.

What if there are no shims? What further work would it involve? Thanks.

If the injection pump isn’t shimmed and the timing is too late, you’ll need to pull the pump and either have the plunger barrel adjusted (sometimes possible). Or the pump flange skimmed to lower the plunger of the pump further.

Re: Paguro 4000 Timing Out

Makes sense, thanks a lot. Will discuss with the engineer. I think he put a new injection pump on it. I hope it's just a case of he ran out of time to shim and test it.
