Re: PenntexUSA - Alternators - Anyone heard of them?

The Penntex PX-2 12v/200a actually looks like it might fit my 3YM30 yanmar because it is not too deep and has the Large Positive terminal on the side

http://www.penntexusa.com/PX-2bro.pdf

Penntex PX-2P-5
- 6.5" Tip of shaft to the back of case
- 4.76" from the front of the foot to the back is just
- 3" foot - Might work with a dual 3.15 foot. Maybe there are some alternatives.
- 8" from foot hole to bracket hole (This would probably work with some space to the side of the engine.
- 2000 alternator rpm hot (200F) output is 80a goes up from there.

Delco Remy 28SI -Large Case High output Bus Alternator
- 9.2" Tip of shaft to the back of case
- 5.9" From the front of the foot to the back is
- 8.5" Foot hole to bracket hole

Balmar 60-70 Small case which fits
- 7.25" Tip Shaft to the back of case
- 4.9" Back of front foot to the back is
- 6.65" Foot hole to bracket hole

It looks to me like one of the Pentex PX-2 Alternators would fit.
It looks well built and perhaps I just install it with the existing belt drive and de-rate it down to <100a.

I wonder what they cost.

Re: PenntexUSA - Alternators - Anyone heard of them?

I guess they are about PX-2P-5 is about $450 and they are used for small diesel trucks and are externally regulated. I'd have to determine if the Balmar Regulator is compatible.
https://www.robertsandson.com/product/PX-2P-5/
It comes standard with a K6 Belt so I would have to figure out a new K6 sheave for the crank, and Altmount does not have that as far as I know.

The other alternative is to simply replace the Alt sheave with a single belt sheave or go all the way with 2" J10 sheave from B&B and then get an Altmount Alt69, but I would also have to change the other pulley too, so I would need the kit, so that's an additional $400+.

This alternator is $200 more than the 28SI. I really like how the B+ and B- bolts work. And it looks pretty open at the back, but does not have a second fan.

Re: PenntexUSA - Alternators - Anyone heard of them?

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember that Penntex was the manufacturer that Ample Power used to source their alternators. They make a solid product but it's really difficult for me accept a 200A alternator in a small case form. If you don't have the clearance in the standard Yanmar location for the alternator do you have room on top of the engine to mount a pad base, large case alt? Many mount engine driven compressors and watermaker pumps on top of the engine.

Re: PenntexUSA - Alternators - Anyone heard of them?

Thank you kenbo, regarding Ample using Penntex.

I had been planning to use a modified large case dual fan Delco Remy 28SI 122v,160a Short J180 #860312 and if I can find the appropriate sheaves, that's what I will do as it is less expensive and probably better cooling performance.

The Penntex PX-2P-5 is actually quite big in diameter and significantly larger than the typical small case, but it is skinny enough to use the original belt locations. It is a nice design, too bad they don't have a 3.15" dual foot.

I have some inches of room to the side of the engine which will allow me to swing the alternator out most of the way past the manifold and this Penntex alternator would work, particularly with the good B+ and B- connections on the side rather than the back!

Since the original belt location can be used with the Penntex, changing to a Yanmar Altmount Belt system with 3 -J10 pulleys would be needed so the cost would be
Penntex PX-P2-5 $450
Altmount kit $450
Total $900 approximately.

28SI $250
Two sheaves J10x2"dia $30 + J10x5.5"dia unknown price at this point.
