Perkins 4-108 Remote Starter Solenoid help

I have a mid 70's 4-108 with the remote starter solenoid. I think it needs a new one. The one on there is obviously not a marine solenoid. It is mild steel, mounted to the engine and gets it's ground through the bracket. I cannot find info on what the proper solenoid is for replacement.

Does anyone have one of these types and can you provide any details on it.
eg. part number/brand? Specifications? How mounted? Is it stainless where it counts?

Helllllp please!

Re: Perkins 4-108 Remote Starter Solenoid help

The solenoid is a Ford mid '50's to '70's starter solenoid. Ford mounted their solenoids on the firewall or inner fender remote from the starter motor. Solenoid's that are integral to the starter motor require a very high electrical load. The ford unit works as a relay for high loads anywhere. Some boats have a long run from the start key/button to the starter solenoid. This solenoid eliminates that long run.

Re: Perkins 4-108 Remote Starter Solenoid help

Are you talking about a relay for the starter circuit? As opposed to the "solenoid" that must sit on the starter motor itself. The term "solenoid" usually refers to the latter. A starter solenoid pulls in the gear to physically connect the starter motor to the flywheel, at the same time it closes a circuit to apply 12V to the starter motor. It's called a solenoid due to moving the gear, as opposed to a relay which only closes electrical contacts.

Starter circuit relays are used to apply power to the starter solenoid thereby reducing current requirements of the ignition switch. A proper starter relay is fairly easy to find on-line - look for an automotive 12V relay rated at 100A. Or you can use the same type of relay used in voltage-controlled-relay battery isolators.

Ford call it a starter solenoid. Only Ford to my knowledge did it this way. Everyone else had the starter solenoid as an integral part of the starter.
