Re: Relion

Coming back to the OP's original question...
Can you just drop in the Relion's without having to reconfigure your whole charging system? Will they internally convert a conventional charging profile into what the lithium battery needs?
Or will you need to make extensive changes in the whole system?

Based on their documentation I would think the answer is "no":

https://ceb8596f236225acd007-8e95328...structions.pdf

1) It looks like it has voltage and current discharge protection but it doesn't explicitly state that it has overcharge protection. The last paragraph does mention the BMS disconnecting the battery if it detects voltage or current spikes during charging. Not sure on this one.

2) If you are using a FLA charge profile the voltage may fall outside the allowable voltage range. The BMS will disconnect the battery in these cases. It suggests using an AGM or gel charge profile.

3) The documentation says you should reduce charge current below freezing but it doesn't look like the internal BMS compensates for it. It does however disconnect the battery if the internal temperature gets too high. There are also cold climate versions of their batteries.

4) The documentation lists a "suggested" minimum cutoff voltage of 11v but the BMS doesn't shutoff until 8v?

5) As others have mentioned you may need a regulator to protect your alternator.

Re: Relion

If the BMS disconnects the battery from the alternator, regardless of regulators, that will normally leave the alternator going to full power and quickly burning itself out, unless you've rigged something to keep a proper voltage feedback to it. (Like a conventional battery.) The little things that can bite you.
