replacing starter wiring on 4-108m

I purchased my Farr 46 in 1985, made in NZ. The 4-108 had a harness of several wires from the starter solenoid to a separate solenoid on the stbd side of the engine,, two high amp cartridge fuses in a black box labeled CAV, and a relay. . The harness connected to the original Lucas alternator (prince of darkness). Many years ago I changed the engine alternator from Lucas to motorola and did not deal with the extra wires. Everything has worked fine through many years and thousands of sea miles.
Now i am installing a new instrument panel with a prewired harness. I would like to eliminate the excess wiring, fuses and relay, but the Delco bulletin on the 38T starter states that i should not do that.
I have heard from a fellow sailor that i could replace the starter with a more efficient and lower amperage starter that would solve this issue.
Does anyone have suggestions and/or experience with this issue.
