Rust on Generator

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all are having an awesome day!

Any ideas on how to remove some rust on my generator?

Some seawater got through the seal and ate away at the generator quicker then I could notice under the housing.

As you will be able to see, the cracks are too small to fit any tools to remove the rust.

I will attach some photos below of what it looks like.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Rust on Generator

I sugget that you consider a rust converter such as Corroseal (what I use on a steel boat) followed by some spray paint. The Corroseal will turn it all black and leave a varnish coating which you can then paint. It's never going to be pristine, but you can improve on it. I do not recommend spraying it with any of the Rustoleum or similar paints - the rust will be back in those cases.

Second thought. If you want to rub out rust in very tight places, I suggest some 3M ScotchBrite, the real stuff, not the kitchen scubber that shares the same name. It's a plastic matrix with carborundum imbedded, and will shine just about anything.

Use the edge to get into the cracks.

Have you compared Gallic Acid based rust converters [ie: 'Corroseal'], to Phosphoric Acid based converters [ie: 'Ospho']?

Re: Rust on Generator

Hey, Gord.

I've used Corroseal and Ospho extensively and one other as well. My preference is Corroseal, for the varnish-like primer that remains after it dries and for being water based. That said, they all do about the same thing.
