RCBs ( I prefer this term as it's a more correct definition. ) are not the be all and end all of mains safety. There are fault scenarios, however remote , that can bypass them. But they do add a very significant safety factor and really there's no excuse fir not fitting them. Code or no code.

Absolutely! They are a great device and I have 3 of them. Shore side of the IT, main breaker in dist. box, and output of inverter.

But, like you state, they are not the savior of all electrical accidents. And reading this thread I was getting a real ugly feeling that people think RCBs were negating the need for the safety ground. RCBs must be understood and used properly.
