$14.00 pwm controller mfgr. claims that the unit will also do mppt.
They say that when connecting it to the batt. (wet cell lead acid) not smart the unit will know what system to use. I want the mppt system.
Is it possible for the unit to do this??

It's highly unlikely,
A solar charge controller is either mppt or pwm.(the cheaper ones as the are inefficient as). The battery type doesn't matter. If a charger is able to do mppt, there is no need for it to switch to pwm.
