Re: Solar panel resurrection

Hi, there, GILow,

Solar panels last a long time, and keep on doing their job well, so if it were me, I woudn't worry about upgrading the whole deal now, one less major effort for the cast off date. Also, by then, you may have decided on a tinny for your dinghy! Crocs, etc.

Happy Easter, too.

Ann

This should be a no brainer.
We purchased all our home's grid tie panels and most of the Enphase inverters from this company.

Now that sort of post just hurts. REALLY! If you could see the price difference between the US and Oz you'd know why it hurts so much to read those sorts of prices.

As Ann correctly pointed out, solar panels last a long time (if they are reasonable quality) but I was banking on a couple of factors. First, I was hoping solar prices would come down in the four year time frame. They have a little in Oz, but nothing like the prices I see in the US. Second I was banking on the continual improvement of the technology giving me more wattage for my limited space. There has been some improvement, to the point that I can now fit in 800+ watts where previously 600 - 700 watts seemed more likely.

The boat is a dock queen for a few more years, and the two 140 watt panels had a simple job of keeping the batteries charged without the need to plug the boat into the mains and all the problems associated with that option. In theory the single 140 watt panel should be fine for the interim, but it does mean weekend trips are a bit more of a challenge.

Not sure what to do now. But if I could buy at the prices I see in the US there would be no hesitation at all. I guess I will put up with half power and play the waiting game a little longer.

Matt

Re: Solar panel resurrection

The US dollar is strong compared to Oz. Four years from now could be a different story.
