On a positive note, I am now a little smarter!

Chilled water is what cools the majority of office buildings and other such structures.

Hi SM, yes I've seen the really big chillers on top of high rise buildings. I was basing my statement on some quoting they work well for fairly large installs, something along the lines of 50K BTU as a minimum starting point.

So maybe I'm not smarter! I just took it that smaller units were not efficient. I guess not efficient could mean it does cool fine but has to run all the time?? Or does it mean something else.

Dang, confusion reigns in my brain.

Re: Split-system air?

We install a lot of systems of all designs. The smallest chillers I've seen are about 40K btu. Chilled water systems are indeed very efficient; most water loops are about 39F or so. They are larger and require more infrastructure so we don't use them in smaller installations.

Dang, confusion reigns in my brain.

The problem with a small chiller is the additional pump & regulating valves.

The whole system adds complexity until it's large enough to simplify the installation.
