Tesla Air Conditioning

Have a new Tesla Y.
It will sit quietly and keep you cool.
Could such a system be put on a boat?
I have three air conditioners that put out plenty of cool air but need the generator. Be nice to cool just the master cabin at night quietly.
Tesla is all electric of course. I have not been able to find out anything about the compressor, how it is cooled or how many amps it draws.
Wild guess; cool the cabin drawing 30 amps; run it 8 hours for 240 amp hours.
Sounds too easy. Still need some kind of cooling for the compressor.
Any thoughts?

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

The Tesla is cooling a very small volume compared to a boat.

I guess we'll find out from someone who actually knows, but I'd guess that it is exactly like any automobile air conditioning system except that the compressor is driven by an electric motor. And the heated, compressed, refrigerant is cooled by air passing through a condenser.

I'd guess that this would work on a boat but it would be a lot to modify and hook up, and I doubt if the power usage would be 30 amps. That is 360 watts, quite a low draw since an 8000 btu unit, even an inverter driven one, uses more like 700 watts, or 5600WHr for an 8 hour night.

And then you have to recharge that battery.

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

The Model Y has an all new heat pump system for which I haven’t seen detailed specs. Supposed to significantly reduce the energy cost of heating the car, don’t know what (if anything) it does for the cost of cooling.

The Model 3 air conditioner uses a variable speed compressor that draws between 1 and 6kW depending on speed/cooling load. That’s ~80 to 500A out of a 12V system.

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

I'm guessing the Tesla AC unit uses more like 850+ watts. Say 65amps at 13v. Driving the car they say the AC eats about 1% of the mileage. Heating in a Tesla eats much more than cooling. The AC unit is used to both cool the cabin and for battery temperature control with coolant pipes among the batteries.

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

Everything Elon touches isn't magic and he can't change the laws of physics. The AC unit in a Tesla is just an AC unit, same as any other. Of course it's not designed to be cooled by salt water or live in a salt water environment, so while it's about the same efficiency as a good marine AC unit it won't do you much good when it's rotted out in a year.

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

thanks everyone; guess it was not much of an idea.

another air conditioning question / problem --
would anyone know how to make a one speed fan into a two speed fan?
runs at one speed now - very fast and very loud.
need quieter.

Use a PWM controller.

Re: Tesla Air Conditioning

If Tesla has invented a more efficient air conditioning system, it won't be long before it is made available for residential, commercial and marine use. It takes a certain amount of energy to move heat to cold.

I won't be holding my breath.
