Question Used Salvage Soon?

Any idea when used equipment will be available from all the damaged boats? Do insurance companies auction or wholesale or...?
Need to upgrade some electronics and thought there should be some components available. Maybe some owners parting out to recover costs?
Not a vulture, just looking for some pieces. Wondering where to look?

Re: Used Salvage Soon?

You in California? Try the other coast.
Probably lots of bits and pieces available in the Virgin Islands, hundreds of charter boats got trashed.
The Florida Keys and parts of Texas May have stuff as well.
eBay is your friend, but if it was me I would not buy damaged or wrecked goods.
New stuff is pretty cheap these days, unless you want the latest and greatest.
I bought a brand new Garmin 1040xs a few weeks ago for under $1k.

Buying salvaged winches, anchors or other "durable goods", whose condition is open to visual inspection is one thing, and often done successfully. Buying electronics from a cyclone wreck is, IMO, a total crapshoot. It may not work at all, or it may have new latent damage that will only appear after the check clears. I'd give that route a miss myself... better ways to save money!

We bought a Balmar 614 regulator on Ebay this year. Opened it up to find serious corrosion everywhere. Needless to say, it didn't work.

I'm told it's the other way. After a hurricane comes through, there's a scarcity of used parts. Damaged boat owners scarf up everything.

In Fort Laud, there's Sailorman. They acquire salvage parts and resell them. There are a couple of other places around, but IIRC that's the only one near your boat, where you could actually eyeball the goods before buying them.

Re: Used Salvage Soon?

Sailorman's prices are ridiculous. Their 20-30 year old items are may be just 20% below Defender's sale price for NEW ones. They have 30+ year old chart books for $29.95. Gimme a break. And they pay less then peanuts to the boat owners. A friend brought a truck full of stuff to them and they grudgingly offered $200. He turned around, went home and sold everything on craigslist and ebay for about $1,500. Took him all of 2-3 days. Sailorman would've likely priced that lot retail at about $2,000-3,000. I know they're a business and must make a profit but paying sellers 10-15c on the dollar of their then selling price does not qualify as "consignment" in my book.
