VERY promising new power source from Singapore

Wow. This is really something.

This power source runs off of the moisture in the air which we have plenty of on boats. Using seesaw, it’s also really not bad for the environment at all.

Re: VERY promising new power source from Singapore

These things are always so silly...

Maybe you didn't read the actual paper where they reported a peak, optimized power output of 70 microwatts/cc And NOBODY mentions the energy that needs to be put into this (Here is an engineering hint: If nobody mentions it, you can be sure the whole thing is untenable)

This is nothing but click bait, and the original paper is nothing but grist for the academic publication mill. If you think this is so awesome, you need to contact them to get development rights to this very promising invention. I assure you there will be nobody in line in front of you.

Re: VERY promising new power source from Singapore

That’s what people said when the first solar cells were coming out.

This is proof of concept.

Re: VERY promising new power source from Singapore

Uh... No, actually, the possibility of extracting energy from sunlight was well accepted long before the first solar cells were produced. So, nothing like what people said when solar cells first came out.

On the other hand, this research is absolutely NOT claiming that they have found a way around the First Law of Thermodynamics, like so many before them have. So this may well be a viable way to generate electricity in the future.

It does seem like the electricity produced would necessarily be very limited (or the device extraordinarily large), but it is just a proof of concept, so who knows? Maybe it will eventually be a feasible way to power some small devices.

In any case, it seems worth watching.

Yes, but the first solar cells ever produced made little tiny voltages at no amps just like this. They were proof of concept. Just like this.

It’s making electricity. That is a huge step for a set up like this.

I like the part at the end where he says the battery will work as long as you have air. And if that doesn’t work then you have bigger things to worry about

I’m still waiting for cold fusion to mature. It would be great to get rid of the auxiliary and fuel tank. A cup of water might be enough to power a circumnavigation. In the mean time I’ll not hold my breath.

One of Einstein's Nobel prizes was for explaining the photoelectric effect.

"There's this Car, that runs on Water . . . "

What was it that PT Barnum said? Something about there "being a sucker born every day" or what not . . .

Re: VERY promising new power source from Singapore

The articles don't seem to clearly explain what the actual source of energy is, that the new technology is intended to harness. For example, sunlight impacting the Earth is an obvious source of energy, that can be harvested either as heat or photoelectrically. Chemical bonds are another source of energy, that can be extracted by chemical reactions that convert higher energy arrangements of atoms to lower energy ones, liberating energy in the process, for example, by burning fuel. What is the source of energy for this new technology?

“electricity is generated when the ions of the sea salt are separated as water is absorbed in the wet region, causing changes to the surface of the fabric and generating an electric field across it.”

I’m thinking it’s like the Seebeck effect but with moisture/salt ions instead of heat. Of course, I definitely didn’t dig all the way to the bottom.

Q: How long does it last?
A: We tested it for a few weeks.

Yea, hmm.. maybe wait a few years and see.

I suppose a lot of people don’t really understand what a scientific discovery is. Or maybe just aren’t realizing that’s what this is.

“ In 1839, at age 19, experimenting in his father's laboratory, Becquerel created the world's first photovoltaic cell. In this experiment, silver chloride or silver bromide was used to coat the platinum electrodes; once the electrodes were illuminated, voltage and current were generated. Because of this work, the photovoltaic effect has also been known as the "Becquerel effect".

That is the exact same thing that is happening in this video, just like you read in the previous paragraph. And now those things power your boats.

Same idea here. Nobody’s trying to sell you anything. This is a discovery.
