Website / online biz idea - Free!

Someone should make a web site for cruisers in the market for a new bank,

where you can plug in your bank voltage and installation maximum dimensions, then

your location, revealing the known-good true deep cycle makers sold into your market,

let you prioritize that list for your preference,

as well as chemistry preferences FLA GEL AGM LFP

and it shows a list of batt model options that fit your space, with the max total bank AH and estimated RRP.

Then maybe a paid option, select your choice and get a list of vendors, with contact info, that service your location and are likely to carry your selection, in distance order.

More likely to be helpful paid for by the buyer, but perhaps supplemented by paid sponsor ads off to the side, keyed to the user's location and selected preferences.

If someone doesn't take this and run, I might have to do it.

Re: Website / online biz idea - Free!

A useful idea.

Why it probably wouldn't fly on its own:
  • there are almost as many opinions on the optimum electrical system as there are boats
  • the research required to have a decent database of options is not trivial
  • there's not that many different battery sizes; only a n00b would be unaware of what group would fit in their boat. Or a rich powerboater
  • if you are charging for the site's use, you will get mired in support requests and complaints, if your recommendations turn out to be duds, out of stock, obsolete etc
  • the manufacturers of batteries or chargers would be likely to provide most of that info for free (featuring their products of course). Most of these manufacturers/distributors have applications engineers. A big dealer or store (eg a West Marine or Defender) might also do the same.
When it comes to battery systems, I think the most valuable online info is system knowledge: the ability to say with confidence that you need X charger to go with Y bank, etc. So a really good boat-electrical site that gains respect and a good reputation could generate enough traffic to get some ad revenue. Or maybe even a commission for referral.

A manufacturer or retailer might be willing to pay you to put that together on their behalf.

But as I said, this seems useful. Maybe there's an angle that will work.
