If I understand things correctly, the current timer module bypasses the sensors long enough to allow oil pressure to come up. I could be mistaken. I’m tempted to disconnect all of the wires in the fuel control circuit and replace them one by one with new wires.
Take a look here jibstay,

https://www.westerbeke.com/operator'...erator_man.pdf
It's the 8.0 engine pdf.
Pg 35 starts the troubleshoot guide.
Be sure your DC generator is putting out voltage to your battery, seems to be incorporated into the run circuits and Oil pressure switch as well the temp switch.
I have situations where the relay won't hold closed or open, because there is no Charging current to the battery. During running the charge circuit supplies the system with relay "holding" voltage.

I am not sure what you actual mean by "bypassed". It is hard to help without understanding what you have actually done here. So back to basics will help the Forum brain trust help you.

If your Westerbeke 8.0BCDT wiring is as per attached 41990Rev A schematic, the first way the Red light can come on after cranking (Yellow Light) and heading to run condition(Run relay engergised ,Green Light if good) is either the Water Temperature or Oil Pressure Sensor switches are closed and the two safety relays are staying energised as the run cycle begins(Red Light), resulting in the shutdown.

The Oil pressure is Normally Closed going Open on good oil pressure.

The Water temperature is Normally Open going Closed on High Water temperature

As these sensors are the first in line in the control system, we should ensure this basic circuit is working as designed before moving on with further fault finding. To test each sensor:

1) On a cold engine disconnect the red/ yellow signal wiring from the Water Temperature sensor tab. With a multimeter on Ohms , one lead is attached to the black wire on the Water Temperature sensor and one on the tab from the disconnected red/ yellow signal wiring . This should provide a reading O ohms continuity ( Open) If it reads any Ohm value when cold then it is remaining closed and is faulty and should be replaced. Once this check is completed and results confirmed good, or faulty sensor replaced, reconnect

Suggest you try the above and report back to the forum.

Thank you so much! This is the third wiring diagram for this generator I’ve looked at. The operators manual specifies that the temperature sensor is normally closed and opens at 210 degrees F. It turns out that is incorrect and this wiring diagram is correct. The temperature sensor is normally OPEN!

I disconnected the sensor and the generator starts and runs perfectly. I used an IR thermometer to check the temp at the sensor after 7 minutes, and it was only 142.

So, I need a new temperature sensor which is no longer available from Westerbeke. Maybe NAPA will have one.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to help. I’ll update the thread after my search for a new sensor.

Re: Westerbeke 8.0 BCDT generator starts, then stops.

While this sensor/switch (Westerbeke part number 045555) is no longer available from Westerbeke, there are normally open sensor/switches used in cars to turn on an electric radiator fan. I’m hoping to find one of those, with close to the correct temperature setting, at an auto parts store here on Tortola, tomorrow.
If not, because we only run the generator for an hour or so, when it’s too cloudy for the solar, I might have one sent from the US, and just keep a close eye on the temperature when I run it.

If you can’t find the right temperature/thread combination at an auto parts store, check Digikey. I wanted some oil pressure switches for an aftermarket alarm system. Honeywell makes a raft of the switches in various ranges, some adjustable.

I was able to find the right part, 1/4 npt, close at 210F, open at 195F. I’m having it shipped to our next port, St. Martin.
