Which Battery?

My Batts are gone. I may as well stick my leads in a lemon and will produce more power! I need some advice. Now dont go all “anchor discussion” on me.
Trojan T - 105. ( total 675Ah ) Or Duracell AGM 6V 190 Ah AGMGC2 ?
Trojan -Budget marine catalogue pg 198 and island waterworld marine catalogue pg160.

Re: Which Battery?

I won't go all "anchor discussion" on you, but will point out you are comparing naval oranges to tangerines
The corresponding Duracell battery to the Trojan T-105 is the GC2:

Not the AGM battery you are showing.

Re: Which Battery?

If you are considering FLA GC2 (6v Golf Carts) I'd also look at Crown; US Made and we've had very good results with them for less $$ than the equally good or better (and more$$) Trojan. If you have available height the 145 models have more AH...

Re: Which Battery?

The reason anchor discussions go on and on is because different people have different priorities, that are served better or worse by different anchors. The same is true of batteries.

Basically you are asking, should I get FLA or AGM batteries (the specific make/model is pretty much irrelevant). This is almost guaranteed to go "anchor discussion" on you for the simple reason that the two types of batteries possess different pros and cons. So the people who prefer FLA will emphasize the pros while minimizing the cons of that particular type of battery, while those who prefer AGM will do just the opposite.

Now, did you want to discuss guns?

Re: Which Battery?

The Duracell GC2 FLA batteries are good quality (Penn-Deka???) relabeled for Duracell. Sam's Club has them for about $100.

Re: Which Battery?

Actually EPM / Deka own / license the Duracell brand for the big lead market.

As opposed to Duracell corp outsourcing manufacturing.

And yes, best deep cycle value out there, also available at Batteries+. But FLA only, not the AGMs.

Check local sourcing on the Trojans too, sometimes available for close to the same price, and many believe even better.

The other good FLAs are

Rolls/Surette at the top

U.S. Battery, Crown and Superior

Re: Which Battery?

Dunno if discussion of "US Made" and "Sam's Club" and so forth would benefit the OP in Cape Town, South Africa.

Jannie, I think a pair of Trojan 6V T-105s gives approx. 220 Ah/pair @12V. How'd you get "total 675Ah"?

Re: Which Battery?

Sorry about that. Yes, Trojans are great as I said.

The best marque, Rolls / Surrette are Canadian and I believe sold in most major markets.

The others I listed are likely local to the Americas

Re: Which Battery?

And do avoid the Chinese "lead crystal" scammers, I think along with Australia they're active in SA.

Sigh.. Some people just have no interest in reading the posts and more interest in just posting and adding ZERO to the conversation...

I would love to make a suggestion, but I think we need more information (as denverd0n said). FLA and AGM have different pluses and minuses and each may be better for a certain scenarios.

Re: Which Battery?

Deka's AGMs are not great.

Their GEL are OK though, can last a very long time but need special care.

Uncalled for criticism. John's contributions are insightful and based on fact. You are the one that needs to chill.

That's the most cost effective way to go IMHO.

Really.. Please explain how.. Or his experience with said battery brands (or types). Or why 4 posts were required to get that point across. Has he actually had experience with the lead crystal batteries, or just quoting other peoples stuff (mostly Rod's)? Does he own a boat? Is he a full time liveaboard? Does he have extensive experience living in an off-grid scenario?

I disagree it was uncalled for, nor have I been the only one that has criticized.. but I stand to be proved wrong and will freely admit it if so!
