Re: Which Galvanic Isolator?

That is the direction I am leaning. Overall still a cheap option compared to the possible issues caused by not having one.

I don't like doing things more than once. So now I have to decide whether to get one that accepts different voltages and frequencies or not. The cost difference there seems to be big but it the boat ever travels afar it would be nice to be able to hook up basically anywhere. That is they way those work right?

Re: Which Galvanic Isolator?

A GI is a compromise , and like all compromises it has its advantages ( largely cost ) and disadvantage ( limited effectiveness ). An IT has superior technical characteristics at the disadvantage of higher cost.

Yep - an isolation transformer is a far better solution.

The better solution?

Charles Marine 30A isolation transformer (UL listed)
$1,207 (list)
60 lb
9.65" x 10.5" x 9" = 912 in^3

Pro Mariner galvanic isolator (UL listed)
$299.99 (list)
3 lb
6.75" x 7" x 2.5" = 118 in^3

I use site transformers , not ABYC compliant , but I don’t need to be. 1500 watt continuous , 3kw peak. About €200
Yes a IT is the better solution , price not withstanding

Re: Which Galvanic Isolator?

4x 100amp silicon stud diodes and a bit of resin ! Not exactly rocket science .

Functionally, absolutely a better solution. The downside is weight and cost, and probably space as well. If you buy a center-tap isolation transformer you get the benefit of a galvanic isolator, a step down/up transformer, plus a big boost to safety. Electrical distribution systems in marinas are too often a problem; isolating from them is a big win. I have seen many unsafe systems, and unsafe practices, while cruising (and here at home). Also, a transformer will tend to filter out brief interference so as to provide some protection for electronic devices. Just a big win all around.
