Windlass solenoid ground problem

Hello. I'm trying to fix a problem with the windlass on a friend's Beneteau 31 sailboat. I've narrowed the problem down to a break or disconnection in the wire that runs from the solenoid's negative terminal to the engine block. I'm not able to trace the wire, as it runs through the wiring harness, so would just like to replace it.
Rather than run a new wire from the solenoid at the bow of the boat back to the engine, it would be far easier to simply run a short wire from the solenoid negative terminal to the lug for the windlass motor's negative cable, about a foot away.
Is there any reason not to do that? I can see that there might be a voltage drop across that cable when the windlass is running, but doubt it would cause a problem with the solenoid.
Your thoughts?
