Re: Dorian

Thanks Gord,

Very interesting.

One wonders how adding 15,000 people would effect that supply.

I also wonder about the hurricanes effect on wells in Abaco.

yep. hurricane Lenny tracked west to east and then turned northeast near St. Thomas as a CAT4. there were a few sailors that died trying to get away from that one.

Re: Dorian

For those of you familiar with Abaco you may recognize some buildings. The photos of Freeport Airport are astonishing

“The council just recently sent a sample of city water to an independent lab in Nassau. Here is a sampling of the findings. Calcium 624.00, chloride 2,675.77, salinity 4.90ppt and there was also trace of coliform found. I am sure it is illegal to sell this water to the public, in fact, it’s probably illegal to give it away,” he claimed.
“The authorities have been aware of the water situation on Spanish Wells for many years. Despite continuous development on Russell Island, the public water supply does not extend to residents and businesses to the far west.

99% sure that is a quote from Robert Roberts, he owns with a co-owner the R&B boatyard in Spanish Wells, if you need work done he is an honest guy, who doesn’t mind getting dirty himself, they actually will complete your boat on time, and he has a way of getting parts from the US far faster than any other way that I’ve seen, and no hassle either.
He is also I believe their Chief Conciliator. I likely have the name wrong, but it equates to the Mayor of Spanish Wells.
Just found this, it’s an interesting read, but off topic of the Hurricane but in topic as to why I think that the people of Spanish Wells are in a position and willing to help

I think that marina is about 2 miles south of town on the mainland of Great Abaco, not on the peninsula with most of Marsh Harbor.

This one maybe? Used to be the only palace you could get limited Yanmar parts.

Yachties mobilize to help Bahamas:

https://www.the-triton.com/2019/09/y...-help-bahamas/

"M/Y Loon is departing from Atlantis today or tomorrow for Marsh Harbour with a team from YachtAid Global onboard.

“Our biggest mission is to save as many lives as possible by getting there as fast as possible,” according to a Facebook post from the yacht. “We can make close to 9,000g of water/day... "

Sea Shepherd’s JOHN PAUL DEJORIA to Bring Aid to the Bahamas.
The Sea Shepherd patrol vessel JOHN PAUL DEJORIA departed from Jacksonville, Florida a few days before the arrival of Hurricane Dorian.

Our ship made it safely to Cayman Islands where we were warmly welcomed.

Once the winds have abated the JOHN PAUL DEJORIA will return to Florida to pick up humanitarian relief supplies to transport to the Bahamas to the areas devasted by Hurricane Dorian especially the devastated Abacos Islands East of Southern Florida.

The JOHN PAUL DEJORIA can transport 30 tons of supplies. Sea Shepherd will work with the Bahamian government to take on and deliver essential supplies.

In addition to relief supplies, Sea Shepherd will also purchase supplies of dog and cat food for the many homeless dogs and cats on the islands.

It's a start at least.

And of course a huge amount of supplies and aid is already being prepared by Florida Marine Businesses, and it's waiting dockside to go out to the islands.

That's awesome

It's so bad there that it appears even locals cannot tell what their looking at in the debris. The bottom picture on the front page labeled Maxwell's is actually Standard Hardware on Queen Elizabeth drive. Maxwell's can be seen in the distance in the picture above that and looks pretty intact. You can't see any roof damage, but that doesn't say what the inside looks like.
