PredictWind Fiona wind speed reporting question.

I'm currently watching the NOAA hurricane site which is reporting Fiona maximum sustained winds of 115 knots. Predict wind is showing winds of about 50 knots. I know "maximum sustained" is not "instantaneous" or "average" speed but what's up with the gross disparity? What am I missing?

Re: PredictWind Fiona wind speed reporting question.

Predictwind uses the same models the NOAA does. But many models are available. GFS, NAM, HRRR, ICON. etc. These models cover different surface areas. The vary greatly between one and another.

Re: PredictWind Fiona wind speed reporting question.

I’ve seen variation like this under local conditions. In Iceland we had PredictWind (and other programs like Expedition.that use the same models) show 35kts, but we had multiple instances of 60 it’s+. The models will show general wind speed and even gusts (if you use that function), but that does not mean there isn’t going to be local conditions and moments that far exceed the model.
