Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

What happens to these boats?

Excuse my ignorance. Some kind of auction after the insurance companies declare them a total loss or what?

Not sure if you're just dumb or mad, but how do you define a "normal" hurricane?

Take a look at the photo posted by Cotemar.
A whole fleet parked up in the Paraquita Bay "Hurricane Hole". All sales still on their booms Is this what they call hurricane prep ??

That photo was NOT taken the day before. That is NOT how they prepped the boats for the hurricane.

Maybe Cotemar got it wrong, but just the same they are parked up in a hurricane hole.

Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

Yes, thats how the prep them for a hurricane. A much weaker one a few years ago. Its an old picture. IIRC they have heavy chains anchored across the bottom and they attach the boats to them bow and stern.

It's the Moorings, do you see how many boats are in that picture? What would you expect them to Do? Even if they wanted to strip the sails off all of the boats, they probably didn't have enough time or manpower. Their employees have personal responsibilities to take care of for their own safety, for a decent human being that should outweigh prepping business assets for a storm.

Been doing a lot of weather watching lately (got hammered by Hurricane Harvey twice), beyond my usual WXnut stuff.
Happened to be looking at the info from the main link to the below one.
Looks like the terrestrial wind speed record is held by an Australian cyclone in 1996, Olivia, 113 m/s, 220 kt, 253mph. If those were the sustained winds, the gusts likely approached 300mph.
IIRC, WWII bombers like the B-17, B-24/25, had top speeds below 300mph.

TCFAQ E1) Which is the most intense tropical cyclone on record?
"In 2010, the WMO announced a new winner with Tropical Cyclone Olivia which struck Australia in 1996. The winds were measured at 113 m/s (220 kt, 253 mph)! This exceeds the previous record holder for surface wind speeds held by the Mt. Washington Observatory since 1934."

Irma at Cat 5/4 is going to be (already is) an apocalyptic storm, nothing withstands those kind of winds. They are the equivalent of tornadoes at EF-4 (winds 166-200mph)or EF-5 (winds 200mph+) levels, but instead of minutes it lasts for possibly hours.
The Turks and Caicos, Bahamas, Cuba, FL, are in dire peril. Irma is progged to hold at Cat 5 or 4 for the next four days, storm surges of 15-20 feet.

I was struck by the before and after pics of a resort-type place on a headland, the after pic showed that all the vegetation had been completely denuded; let alone the buildings.

But that's the same for those that live in a hurricane area and have the funds/wealth to live elsewhere but choose not to.

Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

That photo of Paraquita has absolutely nothing to do with any hurricane other than it is a picture of boats stored in a hurricane hole.

The Moorings and Sunsail routinely store boats in Paraquita during the season that are either awaiting phase out or being or returned to the owner.

Boats are actually getting prepped long before hurricane season as charter bookings decline over the summer months.
