Neither of them own ocean front mansions. Obama's Martha's Vineyard home is 10 feet above a pond which itself is 3 feet above sea level.

Al Gore's home is 500 feet above sea level and 2 miles from the beach.

You really don't pay attention do you?

The obamas are building a new $8.7 million home on the north shore of Oahu Island.

Al Gore has a condo on the fill dirt at the south end of SFO.

Bill and Melinda gates just bought a home on the beach in iirc San Diego CA.

https://www.businessinsider.com/bill...h-house-2020-4

The foundations of all are less than 10 ft above sea level and on the " beach" .

The City of Grand Forks, British Columbia, has spent $16.5 million in a flood mitigation program, buying approximately 90 properties [1] most at risk of damage, as extreme weather events become more common. A combination of river water and sewage swamped the suburb of Ruckle, in Grand Forks, B.C. in 2018. Now, the city is demolishing dozens of homes, in the area, to mitigate future impacts from extreme weather events.
The program is an example of managed retreat, which refers to the co-ordinated movement of people, and sometimes infrastructure, away from natural hazards, often brought about by extreme weather events.
Grand Forks plans to demolish most homes in the neighbourhood, by the end of April 2022, allowing much of the area to return to natural floodplain and wetland. The city says it will also build a dyke, to protect homes in the surrounding area.

In Canada, different levels of government have spent hundreds of millions of dollars, on managed retreat buyout programs; including Calgary [2], and High River, Alberta, where residents were devastated by flooding, in 2013.

But the decision to abandon, rather than protect, homes can be controversial, as the City of Surrey learned, when it proposed looking into moving or abandoning 400 homes, in the Crescent Beach community, in order to avoid the effects of sea level rise, over the next century [3]. Public backlash, and vocal opposition, soon had the city back away from managed retreat.
Crescent Beach, along with 20 per cent of Surrey's land area, lies on a coastal floodplain, and is just a few metres above sea level, which is expected to rise one metre by 2100, and two metres by 2200.

Two of these locations aren't on the ocean coast, or am I wrong ?

For the last one, if close to Vancouver, rates are in the 0.25 Feet (4 inches) per 100 year range currently.

Anarctic Sea ice Extent increasing-

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-021-00697-1

"Antarctic sea ice has paradoxically become more extensive over the past four decades despite a warming climate. The regional expression of this trend has been linked to changes in vertical redistribution of ocean heat and large-scale wind-field shifts. However, the short length of modern observations has hindered attempts to attribute this trend to anthropogenic forcing or natural variability. "

Artic Sea Ice (2021-2022)-

https://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

"While January began with sea ice extent below average, by the end of the month, extent increased. January 2022 finished as the sixteenth lowest extent in the satellite record above all years since 2009. This illustrates the large natural variability in sea ice conditions. However, winter ice extent is a poor indicator of what the ice extent will look like this coming September."

At the end of the month, sea ice extent was above all years since 2009.

“Data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) shows that Greenland ice melt slowed significantly during the past decade, and that the trend has now swung to one of growth.”
In fact: It does not.

But, satellite observations confirm Greenland continues to lose ice. There has been no reversal in the trend, according to experts.

The institute's Greenland ice sheet mass change data [2] shows substantial losses around the margins of the ice sheet, since 2002. It also shows small increases in mass, at high elevation areas, near the center of the ice sheet, due to increased precipitation in those areas.

However, even with these gains, the Greenland ice sheet has lost [5?] trillions of metric tons of ice.
The glacial growth is not keeping up with glacial loss.

Accounting for both surface melting and discharge of icebergs, the Greenland ice sheet lost around 166 billion tonnes of ice, over the 12-month period ending in August.
This means that 2021 is the 25th year in a row where Greenland has lost more ice than it gained.

While the ice sheet's decline has been well-documented, over the past two decades, this study [3], led by Michalea King, of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, found that widespread glacier retreat helped push the ice sheet from a balanced, to an imbalanced state. This work suggests that even if the oceans and atmosphere were to stop warming today, the ice sheet will continue to lose more ice than it will gain.

It doesn't matter where these people build their houses right now: they can just build a new one on higher ground any time. Most of these have multiple "homes" already with spare ones ready.

They can't live in a normal house anyway because they would be ridiculed and unable to mingle with the social groups as it would be impossible to host the dinner parties.

Could a billionare have a 50ft boat? No it would be impossible even if they wanted to because they would be at risk of being extorted and even in danger of harm.

Furthermore, I would not be surprised if it is actually somehow illegal for them to stoop to such a level considering their "means" For example, child protective services could take their kids away, their spouse would sue them for half their money with divorce if they tried to make them live on a boat < 200ft without sufficient masseurs, cleaning girls, and the amenities they are accustomed to. They are essentially required by the laws all the other other rich people put in place to live in excess.

So al gore is obviously a decent person. If he wanted to reduce his emissions to 2-3 ton per year he would have to donate away what was "donated" to him which would mean giving up conveniences like flying. He would have to do labor he has no experience of, like digging holes or splitting wood or repairing torn clothing with just a needle and thread. Then the lengthy court battles because such behavior would be illegal he would just end up in jail (where he belonged years ago) or an insane asylum if he tried to emit less than 200 tons of carbon per year.

You are misusing MASIE. You should be using the Sea Ice Index for trends. Both measure sea ice. Not for ice sheets.

Quote:
When should I use MASIE and when should I use the Sea Ice Index?
Use the Sea Ice Index when comparing trends in sea ice over time or when consistency is important. Even then, the monthly, not the daily, Sea Ice Index views should be used to look at trends in sea ice. The Sea Ice Index documentation explains how linear regression is used to say something about trends in ice extent, and what the limitations of that method are. Use MASIE when you want the most accurate view possible of Arctic-wide ice on a given day or through the week.

The Fight Over 'Managed Retreat' From Sea-Level Rise In CA Coastal Towns Makes It to 'This American Life'

https://sfist.com/2022/02/17/the-fig...american-life/

"If you don't live in a low-lying beach town in California or know anyone who does, you'd be forgiven for never having heard the term "managed retreat." But it's a hot topic in places like Pacifica and Stinson Beach, where planning for sea-level rise means some very tough conversations for property owners whose homes might someday soon be underwater."

I recall as a kid quite a few wonderful weekends and beach weeks when family and friends would rent homes on Stinson Beach in Marin County, just north of San Fransico, California. A truly spectacular beach. Seemingly very vulnerable to sea level rise along with the many wetlands along the Marin coastline.

To much wrong with this post .
I know of several rather well off individuals that as you put it stoop to a mere 50 ft sailboat.
Heck Bill Gates even has a 36 ft sailboat on his dock at Xanadu 2.0 his home on mercer Island.

Al gore flies on a gulf so no he is not a low carbon person . His monthly power bill is more than mynmother in law pays for a full year.

Does he live on it? No: it is just one of many toys he hardly ever uses. Do you know what gate's personal carbon emissions are as he tells everyone we need fewer people and the poor should stop emitting.

Do any of your friends have a billion dollars or more and live full time on a boat 50ft or less? No. All of them have huge carbon footprints. even elon musk who lives in smaller houses, completely blows any savings away by developing rockets and making sure to fly his many sons all over the world all the time for vacations.

Notv
billinares but 2 millionares as in over half a billion yes for about 6 months a year yes

Actually one lives on a 1987 bestway 44 trawler.
And yes it is by choice .

from the picture it looks like they are causing a lot of emissions. What do they do the other 6 months?
