Re: Best place to leave a sailboat in the Chesapeake?

Depends if you are planning on the hard for the winter, or in the water to stay on board when you visit. I'd also recommend Baltimore Inner Harbor area, the new section Inner Harbor East has great food and hotels, Fells Point. Stay a few days, check on the boat and fly out of BWI...and Annapolis is only a half hour drive, which is a great place to visit and eat as well...I was at Inner Harbor East Marina, which has low winter rates if you wish to leave it in the water...

Oak Harbor Marina, great place. It is run by a sailor and his family. Well protected, close to BWI, reasonable fees. It is off Rock Creek in Pasadena, Maryland.

Re: Best place to leave a sailboat in the Chesapeake?

Thank you all for your replies. We are only planning a two to two and a half week stop over in the Chesapeake. As we plan on continuing south and on to the Bahamas..
You certainly have given us lots of ideas that we can follow up on
Thank you

Thought I'd throw in an extra vote for Anchorage Marina in Baltimore. I'm there. Amazing facilities and local stores Inc West Marine within a short walk.

Currently have my 42' trawler in mayo, just south of Annapolis at holiday point marina - up to 6'draft. Thought we'd escape the heart of August. Enterprise car picked us up at the marina and had excellent 1 way rates (but not at thier web site)
$450 for the month includes electric.

Norfolk/Portsmouth Virginia. Tidewater Yacht in Portsmouth.sheltered, easy transport, relatively inexpensive and accessible via interstate AMTRAK and airlines. Fun stuff to do while onboard, safe to leave it while away. We keep both our sail and power vessels there. Lots of folks from (far) out of town leave their boats. Was unharmed in the last 5 major hurricanes

Re: Best place to leave a sailboat in the Chesapeake?

Here's a shout for Wormley Creek Marina near Yorktown. Very helpful yard, friendly to DIYers, good rates, and protected docks and haulout.

Lots to do in the immediate area (Yorktown Battlefield, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown), as well as the Mariner's Museum, Hampton Air and Space Museum, Fort Eustis Army Transportation Museum, etc. Easy travel to Richmond and Norfolk airports, and Newport News (limited flights) is 15 minutes.

Plus, you don't have to spend a day or two heading up the Chesapeake - the York River is right near the Atlantic entrance. There is more to the Chesapeake than Baltimore and Annapolis...
