Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

Those who are telling you this will be on the downside by mid-April and over by mid-May are living in fairyland. And going North on the ICW leads you to the area of the worst COVID outbreak in the US. I'm with those who suggest you take the boat back to Texas and either live aboard or secure it there. This thing has no where near run its course.

Without opportunity for refueling, reprovisioning, or freshwater other than collecting rain. Even Slocum didn't do it that way.

Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

Concurring with Dooglas, FLA governor DeSantis just extended the time to flatten the economies in Broward, Dade, and Monroe counties. So, our plans will change accordingly. Now, we will look to work up the Keys late May/early Jun. From there, we'll go up to Chesapeake Bay where we'll stay through Oct. Early Nov, we'll look to head south to the Keys again. Then, we'll wait for a good weather window to cross to the Bahamas.

Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

The responsive aphorism is, "Hell is paved with good intentions." There is a severe cost in lives experienced by impoverishment and economies in downturns. Significant factors include increased suicides, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, emphysema, heart disease from weight and cholesterol gains, drug addictions, and more. It is likely this cost will exceed that of lives lost from the virus pandemic, especially if the effectiveness of chloroquine as a treatment is borne out. It will take more time before the consequences of flattening economies for the sake of flattening the corona virus infection rate is evident. Can you point me to where this debate was held before we were all stampeded? One hopes liberty and prosperity will be restored as quickly as it disappeared.

Apparently, Gov. DeSantis misspoke https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article241609941.html

Those counties are impacted until 15Apr, not 15May.

Here is a link to a Vimeo presentation by a respiratory specialist at the hospital in Cornell, NY. He discusses simple prophylaxis and tells what to look for to determine if you stay home or go to hospital, and how to care for someone with covid 19 in your home.

Ah, but some others have e.g. Knox Johnson and most recently Jeanne Socrates.

Forced to change plans - where to go now?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Some have mentioned going to our home marina or back to Texas. As we don’t have a home marina and consider home to be wherever we we are, there isn’t really much of a reason for us to do that. Should we settle on land again, it’s likely to be in Belize rather than the US.

Our insurance allows us to be in or out of the hurricane box for season. Our preference is clearly to be out if not in a solid hurricane hole. Surprisingly the additional rider to be allowed in (since our original plan was to be in Luperon, DR for summer) was only about $350 annually.

The Chesapeake seems to have the most recommendations so far. Maine is of interest but seems super far from where we would ultimately want to be back to (The Bahamas) after summer. If anyone can drill down more to specific locations worth checking out, that would be great.

Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

We cruised the east coast during the first year we had the boat. There is lots to see and do. Let the weather determine where and when you go. Florida is too hot by May, the Chesapeake is too hot from June to September 1, and New England is too cold until June 15 and after September 15. Lots of places to anchor out. Its really not that far. Two weeks in delivery mode will get you from Florida to Maine, and you really have a lot more time than that.
