Star Class Yacht Transport Ship in Trouble

Evidently they are abandoning the ship, so the owners of the yachts on board will be contacting their respective insurance companies.

Must quite unique to abandon a ship that is still making way. The video at the end of that clip appears to show strong prop wash out the back and unless it’s an optical illusion the ship seems to be moving forward.

No doubt the crew where still on board at the time and trying to maintain a heading to reduce the roll, she's now abandoned with all propulsion off.

Norwegian rescue teams on the patrol vessel KV Sortland are monitoring the ship, which is now drifting.

Re: Star Class Yacht Transport Ship in Trouble

Apr 5 1730 UPDATE: The ship continues to hold on against strong wind and seas, moving in northwest direction, with 4 crew still on board, heroically doing what they can to save her from capsizing. The ship with cargo of boats on upper deck is en route from Bremerhaven to Kolvereid Norway, it is these boats which shift and caused heavy list. Nearest to EEMSLIFT HENDRIKA ship, fv VESTSTEINEN, is sailing nearby, to assist or save remaining 4 crew, if things come to worst. Let’s hope it won’t come to that, and brave four seamen will manage to save the ship by keeping her against rough seas until weather calms down and SAR ship arrives.

Apr 6 0400 UTC UPDATE: Last 4 crew had to abandon the ship because remaining on board was too dangerous and probably, engine had to be stopped due to developing list. They jumped into water and were rescued by helicopter. As of 0400 UTC Apr 6, the ship was adrift with operative AIS, drifting in southern direction.

Video: multipurpose cargo vessel adrift in 15-m waves off Norway

https://www.rivieramm.com/news-conte...f-norway-64822

Norwegian authorities are attempting to prevent MPP heavy lift vessel Eemslift Hendrika from capsizing and spilling 350 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 50 tonnes of marine diesel oil into Norway’s waters.

Norway’s coast guard has aircraft and a vessel on site with the stricken 4,200 dwt vessel and the Kystverket (Norwegian Coastal Authority) said its aircraft are en route to keep watch on the vessel and its cargo of workboats and recreational vessels.

The Norwegian Coastal Authority reported that a workboat being carried by Eemslift Hendrika had fallen into the water. (the Green boat's gone and looks to have taken the boom of the aft crane with it)

"The weather conditions are still demanding, with waves up to 15 metres high and strong winds," an update on the Kystverket website said. "The main focus is to stabilize the ship so that it does not sink, and make sure that the oil is not released into the sea."

https://www.swzmaritime.nl/news/2021...lift-hendrika/

Boskalis has confirmed that its subsidiary Smit Salvage has been hired to salvage the Eemslift Hendrika, which is currently adrift without a crew off the coast of Norway. A salvage team will be deployed as soon as possible by helicopter to board the abandoned ship. A heavy sea tug will also be taken to the ship that has gone adrift, says a Boskalis spokesperson.

She completely lost the aft crane jib as well as the green vessel and yet the yacht still seems to be secure and upright.

Logical really.. the green boat was lying fore and aft so with the ship lying beam onto the seas the strain on the temporary supports welded up for the trip would have been to much.. more than normally catered for.
The rested are positioned port to stbd so subject to less stress on the frames.

Re: Star Class Yacht Transport Ship in Trouble

While the main focus of the media is on the Salvage of the Eemslift Hendrika, a side operation is underway to recover the 'Green Boat' that fell off the heavy lift transport, which appears to be in remarkably good condition considering her undignified launching.

Rescue mission for AQS’s €6.6 million vessel is underway

https://salmonbusiness.com/rescue-mi...l-is-underway/

News by Owen Evans - 7 April 2021
“AQS Tor” dislodged and fell off the cargo ship.

The salvage operation for the AQS boat drifting around outside Stadt, Western Norway, is now underway.

AQS has in cooperation with Moen Marin and Gjensidige engaged the tugboat company Stadt sjøtransport to try to salvage the new service boat which dislodged and fell off the cargo vessel “Eemslift Hendrika” in the storm on Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, the tugboat “Stadt Sløvåg” headed out towards “AQS Tor”, which is about 27 nautical miles just west of the Stadt. It’s drifting south at about 2 knots speed.

There is a gale in the area, with wave heights of 5-6 meters.

Stadt sjøtransport general manager Per Wilhelm Saltvedt said that the tug will be out on the AQS vessel at 11 am. Contact has been established with the coast guard ship “Sortland” which is located in the area and monitors the two drifting vessels.

“It looks like the weather will calm down throughout the day. We await the weather and will not do anything until it is safe and justifiable. The wave height is expected to decrease eventually,” said Saltvedt.

AQS “Tor” will be attempted towed with the weather, probably in the direction of Måløy or Florø.
AQS CEO Ove Løfsnæs stated that AQS has ordered the salvage, but it is done in close and good cooperation with Moen Marin and Gjensidige Forsikring.

“It looks promising,” said Løfsnæs, who hopes it will now be possible to salvage the new EUR 6.6 million boat.

Tug has arrived at the “AQS Tor”, but is now waiting for chance to tow it

https://salmonbusiness.com/tug-has-a...nce-to-tow-it/

News by Aslak Berge - 7 April 2021
Will start tow on Thursday morning.

The tug boat “Stadt Sløvåg” has now arrived at “AQS Tor”, the service boat that was thrown off the cargo vessel “Eemslift Hendrika” on Tuesday.

In a status update from Stadt sjøtransport, it is stated that the weather is improving.

“The staff were very helpful and the room was very small. Messy sea. Significant wave height around 6m (4m swell). The weather is improving,” said the tug boat company.

Due to the movements of the boat and floating ropes, the captain has decided to await attempts at hook-up.

“AQS Tor” operates south and the seaworthiness appears to be intact. The captain now assumes that one will tow it in the morning,” the message stated.

And even more unique to choose to jump into the propwash rather than deploy the ballistic lifeboat at the engineroom companionway.

The green boat is so ugly, but The boat has shown very impressive strength and good seaworthiness. "So ugly only a mother could love "

The freefall lifeboat would have been well out of the parameters for safe launching, most are designed to be safely used against a trim of up to 10 degrees and a list of up to 20 degrees either way when fully equipped and loaded.

Unfortunately the acceleration during the pitching & rolling of the Eemslift Hendrika would have easily exceeding the safe use of the freefall.

Ugly? No, I love it! I guess it’s the same why some people love a Humvee and others a Ferrari

+1

I love it, too! So visible.

It also feels to me like "The Little Tug That Could". Out of all the boats involved in this event, I'm rooting for HER to get home safe.
