1990 Clearwater 35 Sloop

S/V Heron is hull #5 of 7 Clearwater 35 “Swing Keel” Sloops, designed by Marine Architect Craig Walters, and built by Holby Marine in Bristol, RI from 1988 to 1990. The innovative design (which won Sailing Worlds Boat of the Year Award in 1989) combines the versatility of a shoal draft yacht with the stability, speed and off shore capability of a blue water racer/cruiser. The keel deployed (lowered) reaches a depth of 5’11”, but she draws only 1’ 10” when fully retracted. Combine this with its unique kick-up rudder (which swings up aft) the Clearwater 35 is capable of both exploring shallow creeks and handling stiff up wind conditions.

The Clearwater 35 ballast is comprised of 2500 lbs of lead glassed into the shallow bilge amidships plus 2500 lbs of lead within the leading edge of the swing keel. When the keel is deployed or fully retracted, the ballast is still at the lowest part of the hull, providing stability and lack of ‘tenderness’ in handling.

I have utilized the shoal draft capability to keep Heron at my dock, in a creek, here in Eastern N.C. I can be on the boat in a minute to take it out, work on it or just to relax and enjoy an evening on the water. Heron has been sailed from Maine to here in NC, while one of the Clearwater fleet has circumnavigated the globe providing evidence of its sturdy build and “over-sized” equipment. Its shoal draft provides the opportunity to raft up and party with boats of all types or simply find a quiet private anchorage where many other boats could not enter.

Heron has been maintained to a high level with many upgrades and improvements to its equipment and systems.
