34-38ft blue water sailboat <40K New England

Hi I am looking to buy a good 34-38 Ft Sailboat mid 80s to 2000s some of the names I am looking for are: Sabre, CAL, C&C, Catalina, Tayana, Tartan, but open to others. Reliable newer motor with less than 1,600 hrs everything else is negotiable. I am looking to potentially liveaboard so I would like roomy, some of the must have are hot/cold pressured water, LPG stove, heater a plus, Auto pilot, refrigeration, solar panels a plus up to 40K
Recent survey a plus.
Let me know what you offer. Preferably in Massachusetts but I am open to all of New England down to Long Island Sound would be as far as I would want to sail it back to my home port of Boston, MA
Thanks!

Friends are selling their Ericson 38: https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/198...8-200-3714458/ Might be a bit out of your price range but it's a great boat that they've cruised on extensively. They went a bit bigger.

What is a GNC stove?

Nan-tai 37 is a heavy duty cruiser designed for blue water and price a little lower than Tayana. Bigger aft berth and large cockpit. Designed by Bob Perry who designed the Tayana. Lots of headroom and can handle heavy weather in the Ocean. All 1980"s should have been updated with newer equipment so find one that suits your needs.

Welcome to CF; would check as many sailboat sites as you can every other day. You should be able to find a few Tartan 33 & Sabre 34’s in New England & Long Island, but more likely late 1970’s, early 1983’s given your budget....would keep some $$ in reserve for equipment/replacements/etc after purchase...Won’t find a low hours diesel here, but doesn’t have to be an issue...get an engine survey to confirm condition...I have one from 1978 that still runs strong...enjoy the hunt...oh, and might add Bristol 35.5 (my bias)...

Saw a C&C 40 on youtube last night, I think it's Captn Q or something like that. It was in new england, did need a lot of cleaning up, but looked to have potential. Don't know what your threashold for work is, might need too much? Price was $16K

Don't forget the older Pearson's on a budget. P424 or others in your size range. Long fin and protected rudder.
Take a look at a forum members Ericson 37 that's been in recent posts.

Here’s the link for Captain Q Yacht Hunter. It’s a fun channel to watch. I don’t believe he gets a commission. I think he just loves sailboats and enjoys talking about them.

The C&C mentioned for $16,000 is at the Mattapoisett (MA) Boatyard. It’s a beautiful drive and they are very friendly there. We almost bought a boat that was stored there and they were very accommodating, although they weren’t getting anything from the sale. They do have a brokerage there though, so you could contact them.

I’m not affiliated with either. I hope you enjoy your boat search. We spent over two years traveling the east coast looking for the right boat. Didn’t want to go further than New England, but did look at some boats outside that area. Finally found the one in NC and it was a great adventure to bring it north.

Good luck in your search. We just bought a Catalina 34 with everything you listed on the lower end of your price range in upstate NY. I had several others on my short list so they are out there. I found most of them on YachtWorld.

I also recommend the Bristol 35.5, which is also a personal bias, since that is the boat I have just purchased for my similar plans

Thank you for the video link, looks a really nice project boat. I just saw a 1985 CAL35 MKII in amazing shape for about 35K, I don't know much about CAL boats and can not find much info on its seaworthiness anyone know much about CAL 35s? and thank you for all your suggestions I really appreciate it.

Cal 35 boats are well respected and well reviewed, from what I've read. They were designed by William "Bill" Lapworth a West Coast Naval Architect who graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in marine engineering and naval architecture. There are very favorable reviews of the Cal 27 and Cal 40 in Spinsheet, both also designed by William "Bill" Lapworth, to give you an idea of the design and build pedigree of CAL boats.
