40 ft Bluewater boat

Hello, I am located in the PNW more precisely Vancouver, B.C. I am looking for a project boat that can handle long voyages. If it sails and the engine runs I will consider anything between 36 - 55 ft. When I say project boat my total budget includes necessary repairs must be under 60,000. Wish me luck and let me know if you can help get my dream started...Cheers

Re: 40 ft Bluewater boat

I'd consider bumping up my boat budget and getting the Kaiser Gale Force Cutter posted in the "for sale" thread.

A little smaller than what you're looking for, and in a LOT better shape.

Geeze, that's a ton of money for a 1979 34' boat. Pretty, though.

This is true. All depends on condition and recent updates. Maybe some negotiating room?

I could easilly see someone buying a 40-foot fixer upper and spending that PLUS a lot of time.

Check the docks around Vancouver or even better the Island. You will sometimes find boats for sale that are not advertised that can be had pretty cheaply.
Don't be afraid to low ball something you see for more than your budget. Sometimes people are, for various reasons, willing to take a lot less.

Re: 40 ft Bluewater boat

I have a 50' ketch, built in Seattle, which is a beautiful boat, Steel boat, built very well, new Gen set, new watermaker, new Airconditioner, new Reefer compressor (has a large freezer, large fridge and a small drinks fridge). Volvo engine with new hoses, impellers and a few other things, keel cooled. New (unused 50 gal black water tank, integral grey water tank, 350 gal fuel tanks Large aft cabin, tons of spares, new awnings, couple of new sails, and a couple of very good but not new sails. Wood spars, but aluminum booms.
New RIB with 15 hp and 5 hp outboard.

Needs:
Deck which is steel and covered with an epoxy, needs the epoxy removed. I would paint it and put drideck on it.
Spars need painted.
Staysail furler needs replaced.

here are some photos,
Boat is located in LA at the moment.

PM me if iinterested
PM me for more info

I think this is good advice. My guess is that you will end up putting this much or more into most any boat before it is truly ready to cross oceans. And that is not mentioning spending 2 or 3 years in a boatyard rather than out cruising. Go talk with these folks.

Re: 40 ft Bluewater boat

Hello DIVEROB, We live on Whidbey Island, so close by Vancouver. I am the owner of the Kaiser Gale Force for sale that various other people have encouraged you to consider. Briefly we have been boating 46 years and have seen many cruising boats (1000's). Our boat has always been in good shape, and well equipped, but we still spent 2 years in the yard and our slip and another $100,000 to get MIRAGE in excellent condition so we were safe taking it out (after our last long journey to New Zealand). Anyway you face a big challenge and a lot of time and money starting from scratch. You can read our post and check out some info. Anyway we are lowering the price tomorrow (substantially) on MIRAGE to below a price we had already sold the boat last year, but fell thru due to Canadian Covid complications. MIRAGE could be used for liveaboard till you take it somewhere. Our boat specs compete with some 40 footers new at $600K+ If you have any interest let me know, or maybe you just need some advice or questions to ask. Good luck in your search. Myles
