sailorita2002, also check the date on the boat's customs entry form. You may be eligible for the waivers issued via the State of Calamity orders of 2020. i.e. a simple $500 payment to the Customs Office and Port Captain ($200+$300) would be sufficient. Plus possibly the $100 exit paperwork fee.

However if your overstay happened previously, then be prepared for the 27-30% import tax saga that is the talk of the town now. That has some possible reliefs too. For example, Guatemala has agreements with EU, and only a 15% tax is charged (3%+12%). The Guatemala-USA agreement dictates 12% tax. etc.

The key is, when did the boat enter the country and was it in a SAT approved marina during the overstay.

Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

The hour meter is part of the mechanical tach. It shows between 1200 and 1300 hours. I did some testing on the hour display and it only does real time at 1500RPM, less than that registers less time. So the actual run time is probably greater than the display. I have installed an electronic hour meter powered off an oil pressure switch to give actual run time. Oil pressure comes right up even at idle. The heat exchanger was replaced with the Cupro-Nickel one about 2 1/2 years ago.
The original owner had the transom reinforced for a wind vane, he took the boat across to the Med and back. Kept the boat for 25 years till health forced the sale.
The boat is located in Kemah/League City, TX.

sailorita2002, a correction to what I said earlier. Not a SAT approved marina, rather INGUAT registered marina. INGUAT= Guatemala Ministry of Turismo.

We have a few options based around the Caribbean:

2003 47' Beneteau 473 has just been listed at $149,000. Never chartered, spent most of her life on a private boat in the Med, only coming to the Caribbean in 2015. She was not involved in any storm events and has always been kept out of the water for the ‘summer season’

2010 43' Beneteau 43 listed at $99,000. She has spent the recent summers in New England, making passage between there and BVI annually, proving her as a seaworthy vessel for cruising this area. She is equipped with many recent upgrades including new sails, new canvas, newer electronics, and more.

47' Catalina 470 listed at $149,000. https://bviyachtsales.com/yacht/47-catalina-470/

We also have a couple 42' Jeanneau Sun Odyssey's listed at $99K and $149K

BVI Yacht Sales, thanks for the links.

The 473 model has my ongoing interest but the blue color is a no-go. A couple of these slipped through my fingers at $99K. (One was sold through your office. Same boat sold twice in 2020.)

The 43 is on the backburner. Sailed a couple recently. Great boat for coastal and short trips, but not for a circumnavigation like what I have in mind.

Will consult with Brian on the Catalina. Not familiar with this model.

On the Sun Odyssey series, I am interested in 45.2 and higher. The structural integrity is a concern as I have seen quite a number of badly damaged hull joints. Also, the mast base is known to sink, which is why a number of them have beefed up mast bases.

Many sailors have circumnavigated on Hylas yachts. They have 40-46 foot versions, some are available for <150K but they are early 90s. I have a Hylas 54 and find their builds are really really solid.

nesscapade, I have been hearing about Hylas. Didn't have a chance to tour or sail one.

Would you say the earlier models are closer to a racer/cruiser or cruiser?

Hylas have always been cruisers, not really racers. They were on our short list when we were shopping for an ocean going boat to be out long term home.

Not sure if you have narrowed down yet, but your originally posted size range of 42 to 54 is a HUGE range. In cost of acquisition, and especially of long term ownership.

Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

BillKny, it is indeed a wide range. And I am ok with it. The sweet spot was and still is 44'-47', however could not locate a good one within my budget.

The upper end was locked after getting on an Amel Super Maramu and a Pearson 530.

Lower end is to resort to the backup of the backup plan if all else fails. For example the Oceanis 423. Plentiful out there, and sufficiently sized to start a cruise. Also some bluewaters around 42'-43'. Keeping these in the backburner.

It is a seller's market in the midst of a global pandemic. Hence the need to adjust search criteria.

sailr69, the lower end of the search is 42'. Corbin 39 looks like a nice cruiser, however the lack of separate fridge & freezer, canoe stern, and size of storage space are deal breakers for now.
