Buying a Canadian Boat in U.S.

Does anyone know the process of buying a sailboat that is currently docked in the U.S., but is owned/registered in Canada? I heard that the "sale" cannot be done in the U.S., and can either be done in Canada or can occur "offshore".

There are ways around this. You can mess up badly by reinventing the wheel or go through a broker who has done it in the past.

Depends if you’re Canadian or not. If Canadian not a big deal. If US then as BP suggests get a broker.

One detail I came across is: If it was an originally US-made boat, you won't need to pay duty to import it back to the US. (Doesn't answer your question, but a relevant bit of trivia.)

If the boat was built in North America, it can be imported duty free to Canada, USA or Mexico under the USMCA agreement.

Re: Buying a Canadian Boat in U.S.

If the Canadian boat is being sold to a Canadian in the USA then the Canadian buyer simply registers the boat in the Canadian registry (Bluebook) offshore. The Canadian buyer pays no Canadian tax until the vessel re enters CANADA. There can be situations if depending on the state and how long your in that state that sales tax can be applicable. If your just passing through then no problem, your good to go.
However if an American wants to buy a Canadian boat in the USA then everything changes. Unless the Canadian has paid a special federal tax they are not even allowed to advertise the boat for sale. That wasn’t your question but….just in case!
