Cabot 36

1978 Cabot 36 “Makina” For Sale

This classic Ted Brewer bluewater boat is beautifully maintained and has seen many major upgrades over the past 5 years. Unfortunately recent health issues now force a halt to the cruising dream so some of the upgrade projects require completion.

The Cabot 36 is a Canadian built, cutter rigged, blue water cruiser designed for the North Atlantic. She is frequently found on lists of the best off-shore cruising boats. She is ruggedly built with an Airex cored hull. Makina is hull number 49 and is one of the last Cabots built. With the completion of a few projects she is ready to fulfill your cruising dreams and will take you anywhere in the world.

Included is a complete set of Ted Brewer’s original design drawings along with all the original sales documents. I am the second owner of the boat and she was purchased new and then sailed very infrequently by several generations of the same family. Makina has spent her entire life in fresh water, originally in Georgian Bay and now in Lake Ontario. She has been fully covered every winter. Included in the sale is a storage cradle.

Last fall I began the installation of a brand new Beta 38 HP diesel engine. ($14000) The engine room was completely sanded, cleaned and repainted with Bilgecoat prior to the new engine going in. The engine is in place but requires completion of the installation. All new water strainer, vented loop, muffler, instrument panel, wiring harness etc are included in the sale. The only thing missing are new throttle cables.

Projects completed over the past 5 years:

All standing rigging replaced including the addition of running backstays.
All new running rigging (except spinnaker halyard)
Mast totally rewired.
New masthead Tri-colour light installed.
New foredeck floodlight installed on mast.
New bow pulpit with additional anchor roller welded by Stainless Outfitters.
Self tacking staysail boom removed and converted to removable inner forestay.
(Original staysail boom in excellent shape and included in sale.)
Teak cockpit table and drink/binocular holders added to cockpit.
Additional opening port installed in galley area.
Custom made swim platform added to transom (Stainless Outfitters)
Pushpit modified for additional rigidity and added handrails when moving to/from swim platform.
(Stainless Outfitters)
Custom arch added holding 4 x 50 W solar panels.
All main cabin cushions replaced. New foam and new faux-leather fabric.
Ikea memory foam mattress cut to fit V-berth. (King sized at head end) Mattress fitted with custom zippered covers and custom fitted sheets.
2 TVs. One in the main cabin and 1 in the V-berth.
Entirely new wiring throughout the boat.
New Blue Seas electrical panel at chart table.
New VHF Radio.
New stereo/CD player.
All new fresh water pipes ( Whale)
New head and holding tank.
Waste hoses all replaced.
New fresh water pump and water heater.
All below the waterline thru hulls and sea cocks replaced with Tru Design.
New Lifeline batteries 2x 4D 420 amp hours (2022)
New starting battery (2023)
New battery charger.
New Dickinson Marine 3 burner stove with broiler.
New propane lines.
New Corian galley countertops.
All cabin lighting converted to LED.
Hanging lockers lined with cedar.

Sail Inventory:
Profurl furler for Genoa
Genoa (original)
Staysail (original)
Main sail (upgraded, approximately 10 years old)
Spinnaker (original)
All sails have seen very light use.
Included in sale but not installed:
Rigid Boom Vang. Brand new, ordered from Garhauer Marine last fall.
Stack Pack/Lazy Jacks. Brand new, ordered from Mack Sails last fall.

Anchors:
Bruce and Fortress

What she still needs:
Completion of engine installation.
New Genoa in next year or so.
Comes with dodger and bimini but both are getting old and will need replacement in the next year or so.
New bottom paint this year.

I have a 2021 insurance survey available upon request.

Asking $52,000 Canadian or $38,500 US. Makina is located in Toronto, Ontario.

Not included in sale, but negotiable:
Dinghy Tow system by Davron Marine
Kiss Wind Generator with pole and spares.
Icom SSB.

Re: Cabot 36

When you order a new Beta engine they give you the option of having it painted red or white. I decided that I liked white better....
