"Toccata" is a Jarkan 12
She was designed by John King for the owner of Jarkan yachts, Mr Kanga Birtles to compete in the 1987 Melbourne to Osaka two handed yacht race.
Kanga wanted a fast, seaworthy and easily handled yacht.
John King was the naval architect behind Ben Lexen. He "did the numbers" to design Australia 2.

"Toccata" was not ready in time for the Osaka race, but instead competed in the Sydney Auckland two handed race and won her division. This race included 5 days in cyclone Bola off the north of New Zealand, a true test of seaworthiness if ever there was one.

She was built with the best of materials in her time, and has indeed proven herself over many years and races as a fast and capable yacht.

In the hands of the current owner (a boating tragic) "Toccata" has undergone an extensive restoration. Kanga went aboard recently and was heard to say that she is now better than when she left the factory.

No part has been left untouched, the mission was to make her true to her design and brand new.
Consultation took place with John King to review the rig. John did so and made a few small changes. AllYacht Spars were then commissioned to build a complete new rig. This included all new running rigging and a new number 1 headsail on a ProFurl furler.
The rudder was replaced along with stock and tiller.
The hull has been refaired and repainted including deck and cabin. New windows were installed. New pulpit and a carbon fibre bowsprit completed the outside.
Internally the whole interior has been stripped, filled, faired and painted.
The Volvo MD30 is only 300 hours post rebuild. There is a new drive shaft and new SS Autostream feathering prop.
Many details of the original interior have been upgraded and modified while keeping her true to her original design.
John King advised: "If you add weight you have to take something out", so the emphasis has been on maintaining her design weight and ballast ratio.
Carbon fibre has been used judiciously to enhance the aesthetics and keep weight under control (carbon fibre sink, toilet base, bulkhead hatch and galley door).

"Toccata" is an exciting and rewarding yacht to sail.
Now fitted with single line reefing she is readily managed by a minimal crew. She certainly does not need "meat on the rail" to sail well.

The owner has now bought a bigger cruising yacht so "Toccata" is now available for purchase at way below her recent expenditure.
