Lion 550

Lion 550 2023 $35,000 Located in Ventura County USA
Constructed by Carpentaria Boat Works
Kit produced by Chesapeake Light Craft from Okoume Marine Plywood British Standard 1088 (BS1088).
Additional materials: KD clear grain Douglas Fir, West Systems Epoxy and assorted West Systems fillers.
All surfaces for the plywood are sealed with 3 coats of WSE prior to assembly.
All fiberglass and carbon fiber cloths purchased from Composite Envisions LLC: This includes 8 oz. 6” wide tapes for all seams internal and external,1708 biaxial 45x45 for exterior bottom and up to 8” above waterline. 8oz S cloth for all exterior surfaces.
All seams are reinforced with West Systems Epoxy, thickened with 75% filleting blend 25% silica. Glass tapes laminated internally and externally with WSE. External surfaces faired with WSE/fairing additives prior to priming. Bottom primed with 5 coats 2000E boundary coat, topsides, and deck with Awlgrip 545.
Hull skin perforations were kept to an absolute minimum, where necessary the holes were over drilled, back filled with thickened (silica) WSE and redrilled, there is no unsealed material in the entire build.
The lifting keel, keel case and mast tabernacle were constructed by Precision Concept Designs, using 316 SS sourced for non-Chinese sources or suppliers. All fasteners are 316 SS sourced from Mc Master-Carr. The keel has 100# internal lead ballast as well as a 400# lead bulb.
The rig is all Carbon Fiber. The mast was supplied by Innovative Composite Engineering. It is a 2 piece mast originally designed for Blieker I14 skiffs. There are no metal attachments of fasteners anywhere in the rigg. The boat is rigged as a high peak gaff sloop. This is a modification from the original design. Ian Weedman from Brion Toss Rigging was consulted on this modification. All standing rigging is Colligo Duex dyneema. Integrated carbon fiber chainplates. All hardware is Ronstan Series 30. 2 Lewmar #6 winches on cockpit combings, one is used to raise keel via 5:1 purchase. Boom and gaff are constructed from repurposed wind surfer rigs. Mail sail makes use of cuffs (pockets) for attachments to the spars. No sail track is used, this produces an improved aerodynamic foil. Sail was made from a custom Sailrite Kit. Jib is a Rolly Tasker with plastic hanks. There is an uninstalled prod (it would carry either a genoa or A sail) constructed from carbon tube/Okum, fiberglass, expanded foam epoxy composite.
The 2 rudder system original to this design has been modified to a single. It has a composite cassette to allow the rudder to kick up. The rudder is a modern profile with a performance NACRA foil. It is constructed using Okume Plywood, heavily glassed with epoxy and has a carbon fiber tiller.
Auxiliary power is supplied by a new Newport Boats NT300 electric outboard motor. A new Newport Boats 36V30ah battery and charger is included. The battery is secured in a custom removable battery box located in the cabin. Marine grade connectors allow quick disconnects at both the battery and cockpit.
Custom Pacific Trailer is constructed with galvanized frame, torsional suspension, surge breaks and full size spare tire. All sealed LED lighting. The trailer is new, 2023 with less than 500 miles.
