NJ/DE Combat Vet looking to buy a boat

Just rented a boat out by Cape May. One of the most relaxing things I've done for a long time. I'd like to keep doing this but don't have a ton of money to invest. I'm looking to buy a boat and wondering if anyone has a need to get rid of theirs quickly (ie expediency = good price). Beggars can't be choosers so if you got a good deal please send it my way.

Hi, jbegan,
I recommend checking out the latest updates to these threads:
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ee-197948.html
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ds-147098.html

They will give you some ideas on what is out there and may help you with your search.
But be cautious and do some research. Many boats that seem like a good deal are not.

You didn’t specify what you want. Renting allows you to walk away at the end of a day. To keep cost down and avoid marina fees are you possibly interested in a trailer-sailer? There are lots of decent boats that are easy and quick to splash. You could also find a boat to crew for the many racers along the coast.

Re: NJ/DE Combat Vet looking to buy a boat

Thank you Nicholson58. I was thinking of purchasing because it seems that I wouldn't get far with renting boats around NJ or DE. The prices I'm seeing are a 400bucks for a small/medium boat for a few hours. However the Trailer-Sailer is definitely something I'm open too.

Re: NJ/DE Combat Vet looking to buy a boat

You didn't say how big a boat you are looking for or what kind of sailing you want to do. Assuming day sailing with a weekend capability I would suggest you consider a Catalina 22 with a swing keel or perhaps an equivalent Cape Dory or O'day. The Cat 22 is a sturdy boat, reasonably stiff, trailerable and holds its value well. You can find them usually in the $5-7K range but I have seen them for as little as $3K. Check Craig's List for local offerings.

Just my 2 cents. Good Luck!

As Dadster pointed out, check Craig’s list and if you are handy and up for some work, you can find very cheap or even free boats on these sites:
Boat Angel
Free-boat.com
And on Facebook boat sellers groups (there are several).
Good luck!

This is definitely true, but it is also true that you should not buy a "project" unless you have a fair amount of experience at marine repairs and understand the time/money you are committing. Remember that sailing and boat repair are two different activities and you can't do both at once.

Re: NJ/DE Combat Vet looking to buy a boat

My father needs to sell his Pacific Seacraft Flicka. Info on the Flicka here:
https://www.practical-sailor.com/sai...reviews/flicka

My dad is 80 and now blind, so can't sail her anymore. She is on a trailer behind his house in a suburb of Philly. I think he would part with her for $30k. You could tow her away with a pick up. The Flicka is one of the few boats that is a capable of a circumnavigation yet can be put on a trailer and kept in your back yard during off season, saves money on marina costs.

PM me if you (or anyone else) is interested.

Regards,
Brendan

That is a great price for a Flicka...but **how long since she's been sailed**?

From what jbegan says, his budget is more modest. The Catalina 22 and Pearson 28 would be better suggestions. Or maybe something in-between.. 24, 25 feet.

After your valourous service, you deserve some peace and relaxation. Glad you've found it on the water. Now just to get you there!

Fair winds,
Hope you find a nice manageable trailer-sailer,

Re: NJ/DE Combat Vet looking to buy a boat

If you're in South Jersey I assume Army and not much time spent around Navy bases, but you should look at the Navy's MWR Marinas for rentals.

The first reason is because some will rent watercraft, usually nothing larger than olympic class sailing dinghies, pontoon boats, things that are easy to operate with broad appeal. Around Annapolis there may be some more options.

The second reason is that there are a lot of private yachts kept at the marinas by sailors, vets, and family year-round, many disused and casually seeking buyers, some potentially available for use if you have a buddy. The Key West marinas actually allow active duty to use a liveaboard in a slip in the marina as housing.

This is a fantastic suggestion, Cabrillos!

Reminded me that apparently there is a very active and popular veterans/current military sailing club in Washington (on the Potomac?) Of course, that would be a distance for Jbegan, but based on what you've said, it wouldn't be the only one.

Great idea!
