Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I recently used Tommytape for the mast boot on a J80. It was easy to use and much less expensive than the "boat" version. I also like the clear plastic separator. It's easier to get off the tape than the white used by others.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I carry several rolls of self-fusing tape onboard. I used it extensively in my business onshore. I have yet to use it onboard, but consider it as an essential item for emergencies.
Can’t even imagine wasting the time and effort pondering about its utility in emergencies as compared to the minuscule space a roll occupies and the ounce of weight it adds to my displacement.

Lose a candy bar or a 1/8 of a can of beer or soda to make room for self-fusing tape. Or maybe a pair of socks.

Self amalgamating tape is great. Not sure about for fuel though. I suppose if you put some plastic wrap over the fuel line first it would last.
It's even used professionally on 600 volt large cables etc by electricians. I've seen it 3" wide rolls!

Yes, I carry ResqueTape on the boat. It has come in handy a couple times. Its not something you will use every day but when you need a quick temporary fix it is good to have.

Yes, self-fusing tape and rectorseal/fiberfix - these cure to solid, hard finish instead of staying flexible.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

Always carry rescue tape. Have used it only once to repair a leak in my engine's water line. The fix was perfect. Lasted for weeks until I was able to have the hose replaced. Can't imagine leaving the dock without it.

Butyl tape ?I've used it for stopping a banging snatch block, vibration washers, and repairing handles, wheel grips, and chaffed electrical.

It sits next to the duct tape at all times.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

Used it on an engine exhaust hose. Worked great for an extended period of time. IMHO is great to have on board, almost mandatory.

My experience with rescue tape is also very positive. A leaking fuel line was "fixed" with rescue tape for a period of several weeks until we could replace a failed fitting. I'm a big fan - it doesn't take up much space and it works really well.

Yes I've carried some for the last 25 years.
It does, however, need to be renewed about every 5 years in a warm climate, as it stops amalgamating.

Best price I've found has been in France.

Bought some at Miami Strictly Sail back in 2,00?.

Red, clear and yellow.

Still have some left. Guess I should check that it's still useable.

I've found that on some longer term applications the tail end doesn't fuse as

well and can peel back over time.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I returned to the boat with my hot water bodge repair two years later, and noticed the rescue tape was still holding to joint together. I asked owner why he never made a permanent repair, he said “it’s leakproof, perfect, why would I change it?”

I’ve owned the same, single roll of this stuff for 10 years. Still good as long as you can get into position to make the wraps so tight that you think you’re going to rip the tape apart. you need several wraps to make it leak proof and long lasting, and usually the hardest part is getting some working space to pull around and around the joint

So true. How much space can a roll of rescue tape take up? If that's an issue for you, you have other problems.

A friend was sailing up the coast with me from Monterey, CA, when he thought he'd detected a leak on his 1 5/8" exhaust riser pipe. I offered to loan him my muffler repair tape and a few other things. He declined. Four hours later he was waiting for vessel assist 5 miles outside the Golden Gate Bridge. All because he said no.

Made no sense them, even less now.

Yes, the cheapest price I ever found was in the little chandlery in Le Marin, Martinique.
