Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

It works and can be really useful. It also gets old and then doesn’t stick. Date the package and replace every few years.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I bought some Tommy tape here in UK a few years back (marketed as Miracle Wrap over here) I did not use it straight away, as if I had, I would have taken it back. I used it for the first time about six months after I had bought it. It was completely useless. I could not get it to 'amalgamate' to itself and it just kept unwrapping, no matter how much I stretched it. I chucked it out and went back to the traditional rubber type amalgamating type which works for me every time. I use it on electrical cables that are exposed to the elements (masthead fittings for example and put some wraps around my metal deck plugs to keep them watertight (the internal rubber seals never seem to works as well as they should) It is easy to cut it off when the time comes to drop the mast or undo a connector. I carry a roll each of black and white on board.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

The discussion of emergency patches made me recall a failed exhaust elbow on my Endeavor 40. I happened to to have a water activated fibreglass "bandage" aboard which let me continue without being towed and in fact lasted until I returned to home port. I have not seen that product in years, and it had a limited shelf life.
I recently purchased a drip pan sealant that was useable underwater (shoot it in and it seals the leaks) and it was beyond expectations. I noticed that the company (Dynesic.com) also makes a great emergency patch with a long shelf life.
If the space requirement is small and the shelf life is long I am a fan of being prepared.

I carried Rotunda PIB Self-amalgamating tape. Stretch it to 50% and wrap it tightly--it becomes solid.

not the issue. the issue is cluttering a boat with things that are useless. I don't keep cuff links on my boat for that reason even though they don't take up much space.

As a major benefit of this type of tape is to stop water leaks you bet your bippie
we have a couple of rolls on board. I've used it to make temporary repairs to water maker hoses, A/C pump hoses as well as a VERY temporary repair to down stream hoses from the head to holding tank. (Seems temporary repairs to the head get priority #1 to making the repair permanent!)

Which only leaves one question unanswered: just what is a bippie?

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I would not use it on any fuel pipe. Water it may be OK--but not fuel.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

I keep a roll of rescue tape and a roll of flex seal tape. I much prefer the rescue tape, but as others have pointed out rescue tape is only good if you can wrap it. Flex seal is sticky (too sticky really) for those times when the rescue tape won't work.

Re: Anyone carry self-fusing tape?

Not only self-amalgamating tape, but 2 part 'leakfix' for holes in tanks or pipes, and putty which you heat up with your hands by moulding it into a ball then moulding round the part to be fixed (sets like metal), And what about JB Weld. In fact, given time I could probably produce a list of other emergency materials that I have but am not near the boat at the moment!
