Bargain Superyacht in the Med

"Record-breaking superyacht lost in Mediterranean after falling off cargo ship
12:12, May 30 2019

A record-breaking superyacht owned by an Italian billionaire has been lost at sea after it fell off a cargo ship in the Mediterranean.

The 40m My Song, owned by the fashion heir Pier Luigi Loro Piana, was being transported from the Spanish island of Mallorca to Genoa in Italy when it slipped overboard.

It was due to contest the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, to be held in Porto Cervo on the Italian island of Sardinia. The regatta is hosted by the yacht's owner whose worth was estimated at US$1.6bn in 2018, according to Forbes magazine."

I read the report and there are sure some embarrasing questions to come. I hope someone has very very good insurance: facepalm:

Sure sounds like an insurance play to me. His crew could have sailed it there in no time vice shipping

Just for clarification - the boat was shipped from the Caribbean to Genoa via Mallorca. Never left the ship in Mallorca far as I am aware.

Isn't the embarrassment that it wasn't sailed from Mallorca to Genoa? It's not exactly far.

It's very surprising that this happened, the agency putting the transport together, Peters&May, is very reputable in the field of transporting boats & ships.
Guess everyone has a bad day very occasionally.

Will be interesting to see the accident report if it is ever released to the public.

Re: Bargain Superyacht in the Med

Why take it off the ship in Mallorca , when the ship was going to Genoa anyway? How would that make sense?

Re: Bargain Superyacht in the Med

There appears to be quite some ill informed comments here.

Yachts, both big and small are regularly transported by ship these days for many different reasons (cost, schedule, crew, maintenance, weather, etc, etc) regardless of their capability to make the journey on their own bottom.

Surprisingly, for some crossings it can actually be cheaper to use transport when ALL the relevant costs are taken into account.

In the case of this yacht I expect that it was scheduling with the yacht being used in the Caribbean and then needing to be race ready for a regatta in the Med at the beginning of June.

Re: Bargain Superyacht in the Med

Its not unknown for transported ships to go overboard. The company I worked for refitted an Egyptian patrol boat that was then trans-shipped from UK to Egypt, terminating early when in went over the side in a storm in Biscay. It was found a while later with minor damage to one shaft and prop floating safely and was then re-refitted by us and trans-shipped safely at second time of asking.
Not so fortunate with some ferries built for Hong Kong which were trans-shipped via Denmark in the winter which froze all the fresh water systems and blew nearly all the pipe joints.

Bargain? I couldn't even afford a mainsail for that thing. I'd need to mortgage my house for the line, but the shackles would have to wait.

Re: Bargain Superyacht in the Med

It seems the issues was related to the cradle.
The cradle somehow opened up...
